Title: 1851 Census Look-Up Camberwell - Completed with Thanks
Post by: Rose Y on Thursday 25 February 10 15:51 GMT (UK)
Would somebody please be kind enough to do a 1851 Peckham (Camberwell) look up for me please?

I am looking for a HARRIS family who may have been living at 2 Basing Yard, Peckham High Street, Camberwell at that time.  Thank you.  Rose

Hi Wozzle,

Thank you for a quick response.  I have a Samuel Harris who was born at the above address at the end of April 1851 (a month after the census take).  His father was also Samuel and mother Mary Ann.  I am trying to further my family tree.   Thank you.

i have found them in 1861 and the father says born wiltshire and mother says born hackney
kingsland is in hackney
they also have a daughter mary aged 17 born hackney

Thank you for the look up.  That is the correct family.  Yes, I have found them previously on the 1861.

Cheers.

Hello Again Wozzle,

It would be appreciated if you could look for me to see if they are registered on the 1841 census.  Hopefully, if they are, I might be able to add a new sibling for my tree.  I do have the 1861 etc.

Regards,  Rose.

Wozzle,

Thanks.  Samuel Harris was actually born 1810 in Trowbridge. Samuel married Mary Jeramy (various spellings) in March 1841.  The certificate gives Samuel as a widower and Mary a spinster.

I have early census information re the Jeramy/Jerramy etc. family.  Mary was born c1821.

However, I do not know the name and details of Samuel's first wife.

Thank you.  Rose

phobe harris daughter of samuel/mary ann harris baptised on the 25th dec 1842 at st.john church, hackney
abode at time of baptism; morning lane, hackney. fathers occ; labourer
here is phobes actual birth index entry
phoebe harris
y.o.r. 1842
qtr; oct/nov/dec
dist; hackney
vol; 3
page; 152

i cannot see the other 2 childrens baptisms though in hackney
although i can see what i believe may be their birth index entries in hackney
strange i cannot find their baptisms though
anyway we know they were living in morning lane, hackney in 1842
will see if i can now find the family in 1841

here they are in 1841
transcribed as harrif
1841
HO107/698/6/6/4.
samuel harris age 30. occ. housekeeper. born out of county
mary harris age 24. born in county
living at;bohemia place,st.johns,hackney

so sometime between 1841 and 1842 they moved from bohemia place to morning lane
the only doubt i have is that on this census samuel gives occ; as housekeeper
on the 1851 census he again gives occ as housekeeper
yet on the baptismal record occ is down as labourer
i am certain this is them on 1841 and as certain the baptism is the correct phoebe as well

Hello Wozzle,

Again, thanks for the look-ups.

I confirm that the baptism you found for Phoebe is correct.  I think there is a mistranscription in the 1841 and "house keeper" should have read "horse keeper".  Is it possible you have not been able to find the baptism records for Phoebe's siblings because the family moved between 1841 and 1842 and may have been out of the St John's Hackney parish?  The next child I have on my tree is Phoebe's sister, Mary Ann born c1844.  Information taken from the 1861 census.

Have a nice evening.  Regards, Rose

as far as i can find samuel only had 1 sibling
mary harris christened on the 5th aug 1812 at trowbridge, wiltshire parents samuel/phoebe harris
there of course might have been other siblings christened elsewhere other than trowbridge
Title: Re: 1851 Census Look-Up Camberwell - Completed with Thanks
Post by: wozzle on Friday 26 February 10 21:24 GMT (UK)
think this may be samuels parents marriage
samuel harris/phoebe purnell
date;21st may 1809
place; trowbridge,wiltshire
ext.rec. I.G.I
and here is a possible christening of phoebe
phoebe purnell daughter of john/betty purnell christened on the 25/3/1788 at sherston magna, wiltshire
ext.rec.

Post by: wozzle on Friday 26 February 10 21:46 GMT (UK)
and here is a possible marriage of phoebe's parents
if this was them then it means phoebe was conceived and born out of wedlock
this is only a submitted entry though
john purnell/betty gardiner
date; 12th may 1778 at sherston magna,wiltshire

as i said this is only a submitted entry so the date might be well out
think this is as far back as i can go
