Isaac Broadhurst 31 Lab Leominster Herefordshire
Ellen " 34 (W) Waterford
Isaac " 12 (S) Ludlow Salop
Sophia " 9 (D)Abergavenny,Mon
John " 3 (S)Knighton Radnor
Richard " 1mnth " "
1871c RG10 5596/31/1
Knighton Workhouse - John Broadhurst (13)
This is all I have but I would like the address(if poss) 1861c
& who in the family besides John is in the workhouse 1871c
Any info on this family would be appreciated.John was my Gt Grandfather.
If anyone could find out whether John had a 2nd name that would be ideal as I do know that later in life he changed his 1st name to George & also changed his last name slightly. ???
Regards

Hiya,
In 1871, there is also a Frederick Broadhurst in Knighton Workhouse. He is aged 10 and born in Knighton, Radnorshire.
In 1861, the family are living at Market Street in Knighton, no house numbers but they are 3 doors down from the Kings Head.

According to freebmd, there was a birth for John Broadhurst in Jun quarter 1858 Knighton 11b 123 - no middle name on index. There was, however, a birth and possible death for a George Broadhurst - birth in Jun qtr 1856 and death in Jun qtr 1857. Perhaps when the parents decided to recycle the name George, or perhaps when John was thinking about changing his name he used a name that was familiar to him.

This is superb, everything seems to make sense now.I am sure you are right re:the change of name to George.Just 1 point you have John Broadhurst Jun qtr 1858.
11b 123.Someone else in a PM gave me 11b 169 BMD

The death of George in 1857 is for Isaac's father. Isaac was bap 25 Dec 1828 in Leominster son of George and Ann.
he had 3 sisters:
Hannah bap 30 Sep 1821
Eliza bap 9 Apr 1824
Sophia bap 24 Mar 1826 - she was transported in 1846 for theft .
Surname of family variously Broadhurst/Broadust/Brodis/Broadwas
I have 1858 Jun qtr Knighton 11b 169 for John's birth

You are absolutely correct, I do apologise :-* The 11b 123 was the ref for George Broadhurst's death. ::)

I can't find this George on any census and can't fit him into any of my Broadhurst families.
I think he may be the one whose death is recorded 1861 Sep qtr Knighton 11b 116

Dear Betty,
I am descended from Sophia who came to Tasmania as a convict. I have a lot of information about the family which I can send to you if we can connect via email.
Kind regard,
Lettie :)

Dear Betty
You might be interested in the data on the Knighton Workhouse in the National Archive in Kew. I have used "Poor Law Union Correspondence – Knighton" (TNA MH12/16690-16692, 16694, 16698-16700) (1834-1861, 1868-1869, 1878-1882), seeking nformation about my putative ancestor, Jane Parker (nee Jones) (c1830-1912), who was recorded there in the 1881 census as one of the staff (probably laundress). That might give more on John Broadbent.

Vincent

Hello Vincent,
Thank you for advising me of the above re:National Archives at Kew.I live outside the Uk & have never used these archives.Presumably I use the TNA ref you have given above & I can access the records online. Will I have to pay for viewing the records or not?
regards
Betty

The records are not online as far as I know. You will need to contact them and find out, but you may be able to look at a catalogue of them online.
