Hi Biggles
This is a real longshot but maybe you can help me out.
My Gr Gr GR Grandfather was stationed in Fermoy Barracks, County Cork Abt 1862 as he married a local girl at the time. When he left the barracks (army) and moved to Belfast he was listed as a Drill Master Sergeant and I believe he may have been resident at the barracks rather than posted there with a regiment. i.e. he was the barracks Drill Sergeant.
Is there anyway of finding out what regiment he would have been serving with. To reach the rank of sergeant he would have had to serve for a few years surely. His name was James Galbraith
-
Biggles,
Your address for the RA Museum is a tad out-of-date. The old Academy has been converted into housing, I believe.
It is now known as FIREPOWER, with its own website.
Isandlwana
-
Thanks for that i shall remove it
-
Barracks were run by the Barracks Department. They employed sergeants who were discharged regulars, but their job was to look after the barracks rather that be in charge of drill. It is likely he was on the permanent staff of a Militia unit based in Belfast.
You need to post an idea of his age as surviving army records are filed differently depending upon when he was discharged. The 11th Regiment had a depot in Fermoy in 1862. As did the 13th and 14th, and there may have been others. Until Findmypast put surviving pre-1914 online you will have to visit to Kew.
You should also check out FindMyPast as the regimental BMDs include the regiment in the index.

Hi Biggles, and thank you for this generous offer.
I wonder if you can help me pinpoint the movements of the 21st Light Dragoons, from about 1809 to 1820?
Many thanks - no rush, though :)
Cheers

Biggles, Can you give me the locations of the following regiments on the dates shown please?

Thanks in anticipation.

Deb
-
Many thanks Biggles, the dates came about from a medical discharge certificate for my 2XGGF who was discharged from the 84th in 1811 with asthma and bad eyesight. In view of what you say about the fevers I would guess he was pleased to go. Now a more difficult one, I realise it is outside of the parameters you quote and if you cannot help I understand, but do you know which regiments were stationed at York and possibly other military establishments in the vicinity of York during 1776 please?
-
HI
Redroger i hope this will help with your research these regiments were based in the Yorkshire East Riding Parish 1776 all based at Halifax these Regiment where either returning from America or been sent to America.
Halifax Town Regiments
49th Regiment of foot
52nd Regiment of foot
47th Regiment of foot
55th Regiment of foot
5th Regiment of foot
Hope this information will help.

The 10th (North Lincoln) Regiment of foot was in Egypt between 1799-1801, but took no part in any of the engagements against the French
The 10th Foot took enough part to have Eygpt as a battle honour and be awarded the Egypt clasp to the Military General Service medal. They may have not have faced the French directly in battle, but their presence along with the rest of the Red Sea force played a part in the final victory.

Double checked my information and def not listed in the order of battle for for the following clashes
Aboukir British clash with the French 8th March 1801
Lake Mareotis clash with the French 13th March 1801
Alexandria battle with the French 21st March 1801
(not even listed as been in reserves)
Cairo Capitulation 27th June 1801
Alexandria Siege and Capitulation 17 August - 2nd September 1801
They could of served as a detachment of Marines but not to sure. But def listed as been there in there regimental history.
-
Biggles,
The 10th (North Lincolnshire) Regiment are listed for the honour EGYPT having served in the campaign between 8th March - 26th August 1801. The regiment's badge was the Sphinx subscribed EGYPT.
On another point relating to your comment regarding the 21st Light Dragoons, the 4th Kaffir War is now know as the 4th Cape Frontier War in polite circles, for obvious reasons.

I suspect Biggles is quoting from quite an old source, ... and, like me, wasn't aware of the ramifications of that earlier title until some research was done.

Hi Loburt
I think the H.R.H.A. tands for Honorary Member, Royal Hibernian Academy have you tried contacting the National army Mueseum might be able to find thoes missing years
-
Thanks for information Biggles, I don't think this is directly helpful; I actually meant in and around the City of York in 1776, and was hoping for a West Country or South of England Regiment. My 2XGGF was born in York in 1776 and I think baptised elsewhere, likely Somerset. He joined the Somerset Militia in 1794, and the surname is unknown in the north of England before he settled in Alford on discharge from the militia unit in 1796, then re-enlisted as previously stated.
-
Hi
Sorry Redroger i couldn't help you with your research you should try the National Army Nuseuem they might be able to help you further
-
Thanks for that Biggles, but the attestation forms if they still exist should be at Kew? Or are they possibly also at the NAM?
-
Hi Biggles5000, glad that you've joined us at Rootschat. I would be grateful for some information about the location of my late grandfather's regiment in 1918. He served with 6 Batt. Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. In mid April 1918 he sent a postcard to his parents from Halesworth in Suffolk saying he was just about to leave for France. I would be interested to find out more accurately than I know at present were in France his regiment served. Also do records show where regiments were based before shipping out for foreign postings? I can find no record of my grandfather's regiment being based in Suffolk even though (as well as the postcard) I have photograph of him in uniform taken in a studio in Southwold, Suffolk. Not sure if it is relevant but before joining the Cam. Highlanders he was with the Lovat Scouts. I would be very grateful for any help.
Regards
Doddie

Hi Biggles, Visited the NAM yesterday; their information from very helpful staff indirectly confirmed that the Halifax troops had been to America; i.e.there were no regular regiments at York during 1776, in fact all British regiments were at that time fighting against the rebels in the American colonies. York, in common with other places were garrisoned by militia troops.

Hi Biggles5000,
I've reached a stumbling block trying to research my gt gt grandmother.
Maria (sometimes Mary) Theresa Stangroom. Knowing she was born in Mauritius I found an overseas Army birth record for her in 1850 (and her brother Henry 1850). Both listed as 5th Regiment? (5th Regiment of what?)
Any insight you might have would be helpful. Any Stangrooms listed in military/5th regiment in Mauritius?
I have Maria back in England by 1870 marriage to John Gay in Plymouth.
Thank in advance! Sue

Hello Biggles,
I don't know if the records you hold could help me but I've been struggling to find missing Royal Artillery details about my grt grandfather and grandfather. The details I do have are as below:-
Although I have many details about where my grandfather was at times after 1919 I know nothing of his WW1 service and, as I have no death certificate and don't know when he died, I don't think I can apply for his details from the MOD. The same applies to my great grandfather.
With regard to my great grandfather, Thomas Parkinson, the only confirmed details I have are that he was a gunner (no 5949) in the Royal Horse Artillery "A" Brigade, Southern Company in Exeter in 1887 (the year my grandfather was born).
For my grandfather, Archibald Elliot Parkinson, I have a large number of photographs and have managed to build up something of a picture of his movements but there are gaps and dates missing. The info I have is:-
Born in 1887 he was a Corporal in the Royal Garrison Artillery in Sheerness in 1914. I do not know what company he was in though. Prior to 1914 he was in Simonstown, South Africa in 1909 and in 1918 he was in Swanley, Eastchurch, Isle of Sheppey.
From 1919 to 1924 he was in Blakang Mati, Singapore with his wife and presumeably his son (my father). I have a number of photo's that confirm the year date.
From 1925 to 1928 he was in Malta, again with his wife but no son, he was in boarding school.
1928 to 1933 saw them in Diyatalawa, Ceylon (again several more photos)
I have further photo's of them in Pakistan (Karachi) and India (Bombay) but, frustratingly, they did not write any dates on the backs of the photo's.
In 1936 he was a Captain and in Tynemouth. I have a newspaper photograph cutting of him attending the castle there along with the then Admiral Of The Fleet, Sir E.R.G.R. Evans and a Major R.A.O. Clarke.
By 1941 he was a Major and also I believe a Freemason.
I have no service records or numbers whatsoever and can find little on the internet about the military activities he would have been in the various countries for.
If you don't have any specific records can you suggest where I should look next? Thank you for your time and patience in having read a rather lengthy query. ;D
Best regards
David

Hi Can you help please? I'm trying to find any information about John Cunningham, he was born 1894 in Aberdour Fifeshire Scotland. He was in the army and died 1st July 1916 on the Somme, he was 22yrs old. I would like to know his regiment and possibly where he is buried. Thanks
-
Hi Lynnc
I have found a John Cunningham born 1894 from High Street, Aberdour. He signed up aged 20yrs 10 mnths in 1914 he was killed in action 1/7/1916 and was serving with the 15th Battalion, The Royal Scots. If this is him, he is listed at the Thiepval Memorial, his army number was 18708. Here is a link to the Commonwealth War Graves site.
http://www.cwgc.org/search/SearchResults.aspx?surname=Cunningham&initials=J&war=1&yearfrom=1916&yearto=2000&force=Army&nationality=&send.x=33&send.y=14
Hope this is the guy you are looking for.
Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will be able to help you out further.

Hello Biggles,
I would love to know if you have any casualty information for my relative Thomas Hamilton who was severely wounded at the siege of Lucknow on the 6th Oct 1857,although other records say he was wounded on the 15th Oct ?
Would you be able to check your records and hopefully clear this discrepancy up?

Dear Biggles,
Please can you help.
I have just received a birth notification of an ancestor - Elizabeth Minister born 1813 in Palermo. Father Herman & mother Babara.
He is a Private in HM 20th Regiment of Light Dragoons.
Can you tell me anything about the movements of the 20th Dragoons please?
Are there any muster Rolls surviving and can you tell if he died whilst in the Dragoons?
On the 1851 Census in the Birthplace Column Elizabeth says she is born Scicily, Germany. Have you got any ideas about why that could be?
Many thanks.
Judy
-
Just a suggestion Judy, Her father's Christian name being Herman does suggest to me that possibly he was of Hanoverian origin. There was a unit of the British Army known as The King's German Legion. Maybe there is a connection to this?

Do you know of any way that I can find where my father served in France during WW1. He was a Pvt. with RASC and was awarded the usual 3 medals Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. The letter from MOD (1989) just states Service with the Colours 21.3.15 - 25.6.19 and Overseas Service 17.4.15 - 27.5.19. It shows: M/40356 (formerly M2054610) Pvte Ernest Sydney Mills- Royal Army Service Corps. I have tried Ancestry but presumed they were lost in firejust hoping there may be another way.
Regards Jonathan.
Thanks for your help regarding this.My relative Thomas Hamilton was a member of the 84th foot York and Lancasters. He was an original defender at the siege of Lucknow.
I manages to get hold of his discharge papers which states he was severely wounded in the right leg on the 6th Oct although other rersearch suggested he was injured on the 15th Oct.
Could you also advise me with regards to finding out more about the siege of Lucknow, and in particular if there is anyone you can think of who has specialised in researching the topic.
Regards Jonathan.

Hi lucknow
I have looked at my records wich is a book called the casualty of Indian Mutiny 1857-59 by I.T Tavender but still cannot find Thomas Hamilton which mean it could be a mistake when they were researching the book. The 84th foot were present in India at the time of the muntiny.
Here some website that mite help to understand the defence hope it helps you further with the research
www.defencejournal.com/2000/mar/lucknow.htm
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defence_of_Lucknow_1857
www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1858/02/01.htm
There is also a book called The great mutiny india 1857 by christopher hibbert.
hope this information will help you further.

Hi Biggles! I recently got the name of my great-great grandfather, born in Scotland, from someone I met on one of these forums. She had actually posted years ago about this man, happening to mention in her post the name of my great grandmother, who was his daughter. This contact was trying to find out what had happened to those daughters because she and her sister had been left in Bermuda by their father when he was widowered. They were Bermudians, as was their mother.
Your kind offer to assist with researching information about those who were in the British military caught my eye and I am writing to find out more, if that is possible.
My contact (who has stopped communicating with me, apparently, and regrettably - maybe she is just having computer problems or got busy) mentioned that his military records, which she did find in the national archive at Kew, revealed a lot about his personality. I would love to see what is in those records, but since I don't think I'll be getting them from her, and don't think I'll be getting to the U.K. again any time soon, perhaps you could help me with finding more, please?
Here is what I have so far: Arthur Ernest Campbell. Royal artillary muster records for him were found (again, by this contact, who is his great grand-daughter) at The National Archives in Kew, London; he was a Bombardier, Royal Artillery, he was born in Killiecrankie, Scotland in 1846 or 1850; he worked as a photographer later in life (I don't know if that provides any clues about what he did in the military; he was stationed in Bermuda for a long time. He married a Bermudian and they had two daughters, one of whom was my mother's paternal grandmother. His father's first name might have been Samuel but that is not certain.
Arthur may have gone to Bermuda c1870 probably with the British Merchant Navy (leaving from Portmouth) or he was a bombardier in the Royal Artillery...not sure which, nor do I know the difference, but those two branches (if they are even separate branches) have been mentioned in connection with his military career.
I am a librarian and have great research skills, but nothing beats being in the country where the research is conducted (and I've also just expanded my research efforts online) so if you can help in any way (including pointing me in the right direction or directions for more information related to this ancestor), I would really appreciate it so much!
It is 3:30 a.m. here so I'm off to get some sleep, but I hope that you can help me.
Many thanks,
Deborah

Went to Kew yesterday, located the likely unit which I believe my ancestor enlisted in; 9th Dragoons which was in Dorset (Sherbourne) in 1774 and 1775 and York in 1776. They were recruiting in Dorset, only problem officers' names only in the muster roll.
