Ray,

Welcome to the best place there is.

You ask, "Could he be the same William Legg born in Kempsford to parents Thomas & Anne ?".

We all ask that sort of question at some time or other and it's about the hardest there is :'(

I dare say you've found the three WL's in the IGI which were extracted from church records at Winchcomb, Kempsford and North Nibley during 1785 +/- 5 - take no notice of submitted entries and search the places at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(A-M).htm#PageTitle  you never know, a bell might ring :D

Your reasons for suspecting the Kempsford William might help to find the answer to your question.

Regards

Chas

P.S.

From my limited records of North Nibley burials comes, "September 22 1790 William Legg Infant" so as the parents of an earlier William had a child christened William in 1791  . . . . .

Ray,

Might reduce the odds on finding an answer - there was a WL married to a Martha Hewes in Kempsford - see the HW site.

Chas

P.S.

See also marriages at Charlton Kings!

Hope he wasn't a serial bigamist :D  Difficult question wasn't it?

Ray,

Finally - from me anyway - one can also consider distances.  Not very reliable nowadays but can become more significant the further back one travels in time.

At http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/parlocdl.html one can download a free parish locator programme which has a variety of facilities which you will find useful

Good hunting

Bear in mind Kempsford is near both the Oxon, Wilts and Berks borders so don't get bogged down just on Gloucs.

Burford had Leggs going back to at least the early 1600s.

Hi ChasH

Many thanks for the reply on this search. WL of Winchcomb seems worthy of keeping in view.

The distances you mention were in my mind when I eventually considered Kempsford, today's walking route is quoted as14.6 miles to Duntisboune Rouse, but I reckon that a mile or two could be knocked off that by using the Drovers route.  The distance from Winchcomb is quoted as17.3--I don't think that could have been much shortened.

You indicated a WL/ Martha Hewes marriage, I have notes of that 1826 event & their children & some grandchildren.--Also a family with itchy feet! What is the 'HW' site?

Back to itchy feet, WL 1784's son William, born 05 May 1822 at Daglingworth, M. at Stratton
to Hannah from Caldicot. They then had chidren in West Challow, - Berkshire, Daglingworth
and four more in Sapperton!

       Hi Richard,

I have 3 John Legg's in my slip index who where born around the same time.

                                John Leg(g)   b- c1808 at Whelford.
John Legg      b-  1809 Shoemaker at Dollar Street,Cirencester.
John Legg      b- 15 DEC 1809 at Duntisbourne Rouse.

Does one of these seem a likley candidate?  Also does the middle name MORGAN
mean anything to you, it was first mentioned to me in the early 1980's by a lady
from BRISTOL who wrote to me and said that she was related to Paul Morgan Legg
   and his Emma (nee Wiseman)?

         Regards,

          Ray.

Hi Richard,

Pleased to learn of our connection!   Sorry about the delay, I've been looking for the  letter mentioned earlier, well it did date from 1984 !!! It was written by V. Lloyd-Jones who later told me that her father -Henry George, had six brothers and sisters.

There are a few matches for the Birmingham branch on other sites although John has  been shown as b.1811, my index shows;- b. 15 DEC 1809, bapt. 24 DEC 1809. Found
Seven children for John, any more? I now don't think that Emma Wiseman married
Paul M, do you know who did?

       Regards,

       Ray.

  PS,  any Q's?

Hi Richard,

I didn't know anything about  the B'ham. branch of the family until Vera wrote to me in 1984. My father, as far as I can recall never spoke of it - he may not have known about it.
My grandfather Charles b1863, may have followed his cousins to B'ham. or the Black Country,  or at least had a point of contact here.
So it was not until 2008 that I followed the line of John b1809 to see where it led. His siblings are;-Rebecca b1812, Thomas Miles b1813, Elizabeth b1815, Mary b1819, William b1822 my Ggf. & Edmund b1825.
John, it  seems had 7 children. Of these George b1839 ,had 12 children, Thomas b1840 one child, James 2,Charles, NK, Paul, 9 & Joseph, 6.

I can understand John 1809 moving out of the family home at Daglingworth,-eldest boy,-making your own way, but he seems to moved about a lot, I wonder why that came about?

Occupations in B'ham:-House & sign painter,Boot & shoemaker, Artist (  Painter), Paper Hanger, Telegraph Employee
Pawnbroker Assistant, Sewing machinist, Cycle fitter.

Occs. in Cotswolds;- Woodman, Wood cutter, Hurdlemaker, Leather worker, Cooper

Some contributors to another site have some "Hot Matches" with my tree, numbers ***183 &***900 & ***711etc.
- ring any bells?

     Ray.

PS. Paul was just Paul in the 1851 Census at Suffolk Road, Cheltenham.  Which of his children came back to B'ham?
