Anyone interested in records, headstones etc from Taita Cemetery might be interested to read this update from Stuff - looks like the Council are busy putting all data online. :D

That will be great when it comes online as I have a lot of HARE ancestors buried there

Me too
Any idea when this will be available?
Thanks

Sorry DonL, all I have is the article in above link.
But as long as it takes four temp workers to physically check the headstones and then for their results to be compared with Council records. ;D
Worrying to see them comment that records could be only 25% correct, though ???

Thanks for the link :D

Still waiting for this to happen - Press Relealase seems a bit premature

They sure are taking their sweet time but these things do take time and we can't hurry them up.
Looks like progress is in the waiting

The opening paragraph in the article published on 16 February 2010 read:
"Genealogists are about to get a new source of information courtesy of the Hutt City Council"
Alas some 17 months later genealogists are patiently waiting.
Has anybody had recent success with obtaining information from this cemetery?
Regards Kiskeam

No news. But as they say - good things are worth waiting for.......
As ex Hutt Valleyites - we wait with bated breath

I will also be watching for this resource to come on line, as there are some relatives buried in the Hutt cemetery that I have yet to find and a few more that I am hoping are buried there.

The following article appears on the Hutt City Council web page:
"The upcoming on line burial database
We’re currently in the process of adding burial information for Taita Cemetery and the Wainuiomata Garden of Remembrance into a database which will be viewable on line.
This will be an essential tool for families trying to locate loved ones and for genealogists researching their family history. This is an extensive and ongoing project. We expect that it will be accessible to the public in about six to eight months."
I note the web page was last updated on 04/11/2010, which would be NINE months ago, so we live in hope.
I have emailed the Cemetery Office seeking information regarding some burials and shall post the outcome on here.

I have received encouraging news from the Hutt City Council.
"Currently Council is about 2 months away from getting this information on line to the public. It has been a very long process of data validation and entry and we are now at the stage where we are writing the web interface for our website. There will be a link to the cemetery page on our website which will then have the link to the database when it is on line."
I received that information on 14 July, so roll on mid September 2011.

Thanks Kiskeam. :)
I know, it's been "coming" for what seems like .... "forever". This database will be a very much welcomed addition. ;)
... and to borrow from Newbe ... I repeat, "cool bananas" !

Hi
The wait is nearly over!!!.I spoke with the patient ,friendly Sexton on Friday and he said that there had been a few holdups which were to do with loading and checking the system. However he understands that all should be up and running by/at end of October.
...Cheers Vicki

Thanks for the update, Vicki. :)

is this working for anyone else yet? worried I'm missing something as it's been ages
-
Hi Sjaneo
The most recent information I have received from the Hutt City Council sets the 7 February 2012 for going on line.
Here's hoping this deadline will be achieved.

Oh great thanks - I was thinking last nov and kept checking every week since, was thinking perhaps I had a broken link or was looking in the wrong place. Not long if that's the date :)
-
Has anyone checked to see if it is up and running as the dead line was today?
Cheers

I found that the lawn cemetery is online but not the old cemetery, even though that's an option for one of the cemeteries you can search
-
This is all I could find, KHP.
For the 'old' cemetery:
For information on records from the Old Section of Taita Cemetery, please contact us.
Hardly surprising as they have been providing 'soon to be released' dates for the past eighteen months.
Perhaps the dead line got buried ??? ::)

Thanks JB .... must be in cahoots with Tauranga Cemetery, we have been waiting for that to come on line for ages as well.

I wonder if Te Kuiti cemetery will ever follow in the footsteps of all these forward thinking councils ;)
-
Hey guys,
Has there been any further developments in terms of the council getting this all up and running? Seem's as if it has taken an awfully long time?
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks :)

Their site is still offering only limited records, as shown below:
Cemetery records can be selected online from:
Taita Cemetery (new/lawn section)
Wainuiomata Garden of Remembrance
For information on records from the Old Section of Taita Cemetery, please contact us.

Thanks for your reply, John.
Is there anyway in which I could potentially contact you further on this issue? Only reason I ask is because I am a Journalism Student this year and am covering the Taita area as part of my course. I would be interested to hear your opinions on the matter further as obviously some of the community is rather annoyed by the time this process has taken, yes?
-
Hi Hamish,
Welcome to Rootschat :) If you post one more time, then you will be able to make contact with John via the PM system (the little green scroll) and exchange email addresses.
Cheers

Hi Hamish,
Yes, welcome to Rootschat ;D
Thanks for the PM, which I will reply to by PM. 8)
I guess you would welcome feedback from anybody on RC on this subject, either posted here in public or by private PM ???

Thanks John :)
Yeah absolutely! The only reason I asked you specifically was because I noticed you were the one that initiated this entire post. If anyone else has particular issues with how this has been handled, however, I would be grateful to hear from anyone on the matter
Thank you in advance for your reply too, it is much appreciated ;D
