Hello.
My Nanna Edith Lillian King was born 1891 in Simla in India (no records). I have looked up Fibis and I think I have a baptism record for a Edith King of about the right time 4th April 1892 (West Bengal).
Her Father and Mother appear to be Thomas King and Ada Golding. There is a marriage in West Bengal 1883. Could be them...
Nanna married in Melbourne in 1911. Her married name was Edith Lillian Fontaine. Records don't give ages which is so unfortunate....
I dont know where she went after her baptism record on Fibis nor do I have any other information. I don't know where her parents went...
-
On her marriage in 1911, does it confirm her parents names as Thomas and Ada nee Golding?
I'm surprised the marriage doesn't give her age, it should look something like this:

Without confirmation from Australian records that this Thomas King and Ada having a daughter in 1892 are the right ones, you could end up spending a lot time/money chasing down the wrong family.

Yes Jorose I have to agree with you. I have tried unsuccessfully on two occasions to gather her marriage certificate the last being on this weekend just gone. There is a mix up and the guy rang to say they have to do a manual search now.
So when I do finally get it we will know. The death cert. information is only information from the relatives so you cant go by it. Im hoping this will match although the birthday is the same 5th January. So we will wait and see....

Hi there again,
I know that the date of birth is the same as my Nanna. The only Edith King around that date is the one with a birthdate the same as Nanna and a baptism date and place of Bareilly.
My Nanna's marriage cert was no help at all. It just had that her father was a soldier no initials nothing for either mother or father, wonder how they got away with that one. So no help on either marriage or death cert. All I really had was date of birth and this is a match. Id say we have a match as Simla and Bareilly are in West Bengal... the other Kings are in other areas.
Anyway I wrote to the british library, they have a section on the british army in India. This is the reply;
I am pleased to inform you that I have located your grandmother’s baptism entry (ref. N/1/221/160) which confirms the information you already have. Edith’s father’s profession is described as Commissariat Department. It is likely that some papers relating to Thomas King’s career may be found in the India Office Records. I have also traced him in the Thacker’s Indian Directory. As the list of European inhabitants gives only initials the following details would have to be compared with other sources:
1892 Conductor, Commissariat Department, Bareilly.
1894 Honorary Lt., Commissariat Department, Nawgong.
1895 Honorary Captain, Commissariat Department, Dinapur.
1899 Superintendent, Commsr’s Office, Hoshangabad.
1900 Hoshangabad. (It is the last entry).
The surname King is very popular and it would require a thorough search to establish whether he is the same person. It is very unlikely that Edith was the only child but finding her siblings may prove a very time consuming task.
So Jorose or others what do you think and where can I go from here?

Now that you've established that the birth date is right,
www.familysearch.org does show two other girls possibly born to this family.
one is Hilda Clare King, b. and chrs. 1892 in Nowgong (Nawgong?) (gives her father as Thomas Henry)
the other is Maude King, chrs. 1884 in Darjeeling
You could try tracking what happened to these girls.
You could also try getting a copy of the marriage certificate from 1883, I believe that might list Thomas and Ada's fathers' names.

Jorose you are one in a million! So, pardon my ignorance, where do I go to purchase the marriage certificate? to FIBIS? Im just not sure where...
Thanks again for your help. You have ben so very helpful to my family tree....
-
It seems as the record on Fibis is "N1" (church record) that you might have to apply to the BL (they charge £18 if you have the reference)
http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelpregion/asia/india/indiaofficerecordsfamilyhistory/ecclesiasticapplication3.pdf
(I haven't tried ordering through them before).
I will check for you tonight to see whether any of these records also appear in the overseas indexes (in which case you could try to get the certificate from the GRO).
There does seem to be also an Ada Golding b. 1867 in Madras (parents Thomas Golding and Mary Ann...)

I would love to purchase this and yes I did see the the birth of Ada Golding also...would be wonderful if somehow that door was open.... thankyou so much. :)

Hi Sue, I was wondering if you managed to find the children of Thomas & Ada King. My great aunty married the son of Thomas & Ada King ( Harold Edward King) and the family have just started to research his past. I've not had any experiance researching British / Indian records so wasnt quiet sure how to help them. Any suggestions / insight would be fabulous.
Thanks!!

Oh Wow!!! Harold Edward King was my Nanna's brother. He married an amelia Gash? Is that correct. He died in 1998 and I am so sad I never knew he existed nor did my Mother. apparently my nanna must have taken a few skeletons to her grave. I have a family tree that I have done as best I can on Ancestry. If you send me your email in a private message I will add you to the tree so you can see it.
My Mother is still alive as is her brother my Uncle Paul. Mum is 90. She didnt know that Nanna had any brothers or sisters... weird hey and they were all in Victoria.
Anyhow nice to hear from someone who knows a family memeber, and I hope we speak again soon.
Bless

Hi Sue,
I believe that there was another brother, Ernest too but my understanding was that Harold never spoke about his family. Harold married Mona Amelia Gash and I met their daughter for the first time on the weekend while researching the Gash family.....who also appeared to have a few secrets ;-)
I am very new to this forum so am not quite sure how to do the private note but will work things out (& if all else fails will have a look for you on ancestry.)
I know that Margaret will be delighted to hear further information and will pass your details on (once I manage to swap details).
Thanks for your lovely reply

Thankyou barryd for your info and yes it lines up definately my Nanna and her family. I have since found out that when Thomas King married Ada Golding he was a widower...as it states on their marriage certificate. His Father's nmae was also Thomas King. Cant find any other info nor where he actually came from although I suspect that it was England. :( so hard sometimes.....

Hello Rose,
Yes you are correct about the other brother Ernest and a sister Maud. There were about 9 King births both in India and Victoria. Not all were Kings and not all survived. I'd say it was a particularly sad and difficult time for Ada. She lost her husband Thomas 4 months after landing in Australia in 1896, and then lost 3 children in just a few years, already losing 2 or 3 previously in India. She was 22 years old with no husband in a strange land. She was married at 15 to Thomas who was 30. I cant imagine how she coped, but bless her she lived to be 85!!
I know nothing about her but feel blessed that she was my great Grandma.
Talk again soon.
Sue
