A few of us Kiwis are going to be having an informal meet at Auckland Archives on 22nd of March in order to do some personal research and a bit of networking. It is possible that some of us may have some time to assist others who are not able to get to Auckland.
Please post here and I will compile a list and we will do our best to get your queries answered, as always it will be 'First up, best dressed'
Alan NZ.

It looks like you might have you day cut out,if all the outstanding requests are still wanted

Firstlly Alan thank you So much for my last look up you did and emailing of results to me ;D
I would like some info on the following. If it is not possible to actually look up the info at the very least can you inquire what a it is about?
Tai Tokerau alienation file - Otahu 1- FROM Toro Hemata and another - TO James Purdy. Years 1911-1911
Agency BAA1
Box/ Item 191
Record 335
I have emailed Archives twice and never received a reply.
As James died 1911, I wonder if it is a land claim.
There are others later also 1912/1915/1921/1923 possibly for his son James.
Cheers,
Trish :)

Hi there,
If there's spare moments, may I ask for one lookup please, for my great uncle's probate. If I can return the favour with lookup for NSW info for anyone, please do ask.
SMITH Thomas Hartley - Auckland - Retired 1979 - 1979 (he was a son of John and Mary Smith, Thomas born in NSW, married in NZ, perhaps there's mention of his widowed sister Rebecca who left NSW late 60's to live with him in Auckland)
I think this is the Archways reference number : BBAE 1570 Box3070 181/1979

Hi Vivien,

I have recently been doing some searching for a cousin, came across Henry Stackpole Parker and your postings came up in Google.
Will be in touch.

Have now completed a complete database of all the lookups on this thread and it amounts to a total of 32 individual files we should have more than enough so am closing the thread as far as lookups for this visit are concerned.
I seem to have lost track of those who are going so could you please send me a pm/e-mail to remind me and I will let archives know how many of us will be attending.

Hi all,
just making a response on behalf of all those that helped at Archives today. I had hoped that we would be able to get through them all but unfortunately time got away from us and some were not processed. I myself only got through less than half the files so will need to go back at a later date so will try and sort those that we did not manage to get to then.
We all took a few files during the day and I will leave it up to those that processed the files to make contact direct. As most if not all those handled involved images then a request will be made for an e-mail address so don't be surprised if this request is forthcoming.
It was an interesting day and I must say that once again i was very impressed with the staff on duty at the time, those I dealt with were very helpfull. Files took a while to come through which may have been due to the relatively large number of us there.

Got this one, can you pm me your address. Ellie has got the others and she will contact you soon.

Hi all,
I'm really pleased to read today's posts, and while I realise that perhaps you may not have got to my request (it was among the last to be posted here on this thread), that's not a worry. I'm just so pleased that you were all able to meet together and received good co-operation from the Archives staff. I hope you took time to have tea/coffee and food together too, and were able to chat about yourselves. There's nothing much better than putting faces to RChat contacts. And one day I hope to get across the Tasman to thank you for helping me with the various questions and lookups I have already made, and will most likely be making at future times.
Cheers, JM

Thanks particularly to Janette and all the others who did lookups. My mystery deepens, I wonder whether Mary Hutchins is May Hutchins widow of Alma George since she died intestate and none of the family appear to have been interested in administering her estate. As I know that Alma and May's son Robert Dick Hutchins (known as Tom Hutchins and apparently quite a well known NZ photographer) died in 2007 it makes you wonder why none of the family administered her estate?? The mystery remains as to who the youngest child was, I may yet find out when the BMD indexes get further forward on births!!
Thanks again.
Nicola
-
Hi Nicola,
Yes Mary does appear to be the widow of Alma George Hutchins, they are both buried in Waikumete cemetery in Auckland,Alma died 19-Jan-1944 aged 61yrs buried in ANGLICAN DIVISION K Row 2, Plot 71 Mary is in the same plot.

-
Ah, that's right, I remember someone pointing that out a couple of year's back. Strange none of the family seems to have been interested in administering her estate ... shame for me!
Thanks again
Nicola
-
Hi Nicola,
what is it you are looking for?
The funeral directors that did both funerals are still in Auckland,an email to them may help,,
Cheers Janette
-
Hi Janette
I'm trying to find out the name of the youngest child, I've been told they had three but have only found details of the daughter Alma May Hutchins and son Robert Dick Hutchins. Unfortunately the births are too late for the current index period. Was hoping that if May/Mary left a Will it would have confirmed whether there was a 3rd child, assuming he (as allegedly a son) was still alive then. The info was from a distant relative whose info has been a little suspect so unsure if its true or not. Not an issue, I'll have to wait for the indexes to come forward. Problem is that the daughter was born in NZ, the son in Australia, and don't know when they went back into NZ so could have been born anywhere!! The story from my grandmother (who is Alma George Hutchin's great neice) was that he had gone to the US, so you can see even info in the family is a bit suspect. ::)
Thanks to yourself and Kiwi Girl I've found out quite a lot more that I wasn't aware of. :)
Nicola
-
... (known as Tom Hutchins and apparently quite a well known NZ photographer)
I remember Tom Hutchins from lots of years ago, a reserved, unassuming man who was my photography lecturer at art school, and of whom I was in awe.
There is an obituary for him at Photoforum NZ (http://www.photoforum-nz.org/index.php?pageID=71#Obituary:%20Robert%20Dick%20%28Tom%29%20Hu) which states he was the first son of Alma George Hutchins, implying there may have been another. They went to NZ from Australia in 1923.
Also found a .pdf from the Cerebral Palsy Society which includes a piece about him:
http://www.cpsoc.org.nz/review/Review%20June%2007.pdf
:)

Koromo
Hi Koromo
Yes that's an interesting obituary, I think there's another one somewhere that I found via google last year. The parents married in NZ in 1920 and daughter Alma May was born there (I'm assuming she's theirs because of the names) the same year. They must have then gone to Australia, and returned in 1923. Problem being that a later child, as far as I've heard its probably a second son, could have been born in Australia or New Zealand! May have to wait a few years for the indexes to get the early 1920s birth registrations online! The marriage and daughter's birth entries came from BMD indexes I looked at a couple of year's back but they only went up to 1920.
Thanks to everyone who has helped with this, I do appreciate it.
