Title: Vic Birth Lookup Please - Thomas MOONEY b.1862
Post by: dustyrover on Friday 19 February 10 13:08 GMT (UK)
I have been unable to find Thomas's b/c & I have just realised that perhaps one of you can have success where I have not.
I have information taken from a family bible which records his birth as:
b.10 Aug 1862, Keilor, Vic.
His parents were James Mooney & Mary Cannon.
This post is related to "James Patrick Mooney" http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,429334.0.html

Dustyrover if you go back to the other thread you quoted above http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,429334.0.html you will find that Alison & Cando have already posted that he is not on the indexes, I have also checked myself & he is not there.

So, either his birth was never registered or if it was a parish registration it possibly may never have made it to the registars office to be recorded there are many early registrations not on the indexes.

I found a record of parish baptisms for St Augustine's RC Church for Keilor Plains. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pobjoyoneill/Keilor/KEILBAPT.htm
I found 4 Mooney's with 3 having the parents of James & Mary Cannon/Canning. Catherine was born 13 Jan 1861. As she was probably the child born before Thomas (b.10 Aug 1862), I think I would like to obtain her b/c if possible as it may give some more details about the children.
Would someone be able to look up the details for me please.
Regards
Dustyrover

re Thomas Mooney born 1862
I have searched the Victorian Online indexes and did receive a positive return for a Thomas Mooney,  born 1862.  However, all of your other information was rejected - father's name, mother's name location of birth.  This index is far from user friendly, the aim being to generate revenue.  The Vic Pioneers Index, where details are available, is probably being referred to above, and is viewable at many libraries.
Perhaps time will tell.
There were eight James Mooneys listed in the 1856 Electoral Roll, which appears to be a large number, considering you had to own or lease property to a given value, or a miner's licence??
re Mooney born 1861
There were 6 Mooneys born in 1861, three had James as a father, one had Mary as a mother, but the surname was neither Cannon or Canning.  Once again Keilor was rejected. However, would it have been listed as such in 1861????

Thanks Raveon.
I can't understand why he is not registered as it appears all the older children were registered through baptism. There must be a story somewhere in this!

Dustyrover....chatters searched extensively for a birth for Thomas in 1862.  This has been covered in http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,429334.0.html

Those who wish to help may benefit from reading the the linked thread.

Your Thomas MOONEY's birth was not registered.

raveon the Thomas MOONEY 1862 birth you refer to is not the son of James and Mary CANNING.

Cheers
Cando

Cando appears to be correct and I might have nothing to add but......
I think I will give you everything I have and let you decide its relevance.
A search of the Vic Pioneers Index > 1888 has produced little of significance.
1.      It was obvious that there were at least a couple of Mary ( maiden name) Cannons in Melbourne in the 1850s and 1860s.
2.   One positive return :  Laurence Mooney born to James and Mary Canning at Keilor Pl  ( = Plains) in 1859 (Reg  635) .... already mentioned several times.
3.   Thomas Mooney married Sarah Maria Hoskinson at Keilor in 1886 (/ reg 6068)
4.   Another birth may be irrelevant.  Bridget Mooney born in 1853 ( reg 46257)  Father James ; mother Mary Cannon.  In this entry, religion was given as RC and registration was in the Parish of Melbourne – Geelong RC   ( Note; 1853 is in the middle of Victoria's early goldrush period, the State is less than two years old, and its Government is in its infancy, population is increasing rather rapidly - distance from Melbourne to Geelong was over 40 miles ( 65 - 80  kms ).  Keilor is northwest of Melbourne and Geelong is south-west.)
Alternative spellings were searched.
Birth registrations for both Catherine and Thomas Mooney returned no details at all in the index.
Am I right in feeling that two families ( James and Mary ) with similar surnames might have been living in this area????

raveon information is posted on the linked threads.....The MOONEY family has been well researched.  Perhaps a quick read of the threads will save you duplicating information.

As posted previously there is no birth registration in 1862 for Thomas son of James MOONEY and Mary CANNING/CANNON/CAMERON etc.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice, Cando.
Did as I was asked and did not need to waste the time at the library this morning, although I did research for myself as well.   Perhaps I can provide another aspect to this, having taken the link.

110 Mooney, James Farmer Freehold Willowmavin
181 Seymour, Malachi Farmer Freehold Willowmavin

Denis MOONEY m Mary SEYMOUR 1877 # 7656X1906

The pasting immediately above is from your link.  The two above it have been taken from the 1856 Kilmore Electoral Roll for Victoria's Legislative Council ( Upper House ). This is available and can be easily found with the four word search.  My assumption now is that Dennis Mooney and Mary Seymour were "neighbours", geographically and socially, as Willowmavin is an area just west of Kilmore.  Kilmore is miles from Keilor, or the Keilor Plains  - in present terms, 60 - 80 kms.  As a Victorian, I find it hard to reconcile some of the postings about Mooneys at Keilor in this present discussion ( and refer to Bridget b Cork, not Richmond)  and someone, who, as early as 1856, held enough land to give him a vote in Victoria's Upper House of parliament.  Contradictions appear to exist in both discussions.

Thanks Raveon.
I will think about this for a while as I find contradictions as well. Maybe some time to digest.
Thanks to all
