Title: Thomas PROBERT
Post by: k.whigham on Thursday 18 February 10 12:49 GMT (UK)
I have only just learned that an ancestor Thomas Probert emigrated to Australia at end of the 19th century.  He was born in 1867 in Disserth, Radnorshire, Wales and spent part of his childhood in an Orphanage in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.  I don't know where he ended up - possibly Tasmania?  Any help you can give would be very much appreciated.

Hi Kate,

I think this may be your Thomas Probert.

Thomas Alfred Probert married Emily Alice Daymon
1/08/1898 at Evendale Tasmania.
Reg no.131/1898  RDG 37.

Thomas was aged 31 and Emily aged 25.

Two children born to Thomas and Emily.

John Thomas born 22/11/1898 at Evendale Tasmania.
Thomas Daymon born 26/08/1902 at Evandale Tasmania.
Could be more children but can`t see them at the moment.

Thomas Alfred Probert buried Cornelian Bay Cemetery Hobart.
Buried 21/09/1940.
Emily is buried with him also. :)
I can give you more details on the burial if you want.

By googling I found the following:

http://eheritage.statelibrary.tas.gov.au/
Headstone of Thomas Daymon PROBERT . Died in 1965 aged 62yrs

and (too late for the son but perhaps a grandson)
Headstone of John Thomas (Jack) PROBERT . Born in 1921, died in 1983.

Hi Kate,

Yes I found that the two children had moved to Gladstone in Tasmania. One I think had a wife named Annie. There is also a war record at the National Archives for one of the children but is yet to be veiwed.
Thomas Alfred Probert at the time of his death was living at 28 Charles Street in Moonah Tasmania so was his wife when she passed on. His wife died five weeks before he did.
The house is probably still there today. :) I can always go and have a look for you.I can also check for a headstone if you want.

Thank you very much for this info.  It looks like the correct Thomas (his father was also Thomas Alfred).  I've long wondered what became of him so it's nice to find out.
Is there any way of telling if he was a voluntary emigrant or was he transported for some crime or other?

Thanks again, Kate

Two years on and I have a few more questions.

A 1922 voters' roll showed a Gwendoline Maude Probert (a clerk) living with Thomas Probert and his wife, but I have no other trace of her. Who was she?

Also, when Thomas Alfred Probert died in 1940 his estate was divided equally between his son Thomas Daymon Probert and Charles Clarence Pitt, but I can find no relationship between Proberts and Pitts.  Who was he?

Any help gratefully received.

CHARLES CLARENCE PITT has a ww1 service history digitised.
He was born in LONGFORD, Tas. and was 21 when he enlisted in 1915. His mother was NOK and her name was SARAH ELIZABETH PITT.

He was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the Meritorious Medal

Kate,
A good deal of information is available regarding CHARLES CLARENCE PITT.
When you say you have not established a connection does that mean you have searched the man's details?

I am sure many here will provide his parentage, death, E R information and his daughter's birth and marriage, but it would not be a real help to you if you already held these details.

It strikes me as interesting that in 1922 the couple Charles Clarence and Agnes PITT and the couple Thomas and Emily PROBERT lived in the same street, possibly the same residence.

Merlin - thank you for solving the mystery of Gwendoline.  I had only found Thomas's children John ('98), Thomas ('02), Margaret ('04) and Emily ('05), and I knew John and Margaret died in infancy.  I had no idea he had eleven! Makes it all the more strange that only Thomas seems to have inherited anything. Is there a site online where I can find the other children?

Sparrett - Sue, thank you for the info on Charles Pitt.  I know very little about him - I had established that he was a bicycle repairer and that he wasn't a son-in-law.  Maybe he inherited because he was just a good neighbour! (btw, what does "NOK" mean?)

Thank you both for your time. With Thomas having so many children, perhaps I have lots of distant cousins in Australia.

Next of Kin.

If you read his War Service digitised record you will see his mother is his stated NOK.

His father died 31st October 1906 aged 37.

Here is the headstone of one of Thomas Alfred Proberts sons.

Tasman Lewis Probert.

Engagement notice for Tasman which proves he is a son of Thomas Alfred Probert.

Hi Kate,

I finally checked out where 28 Charles Street is in Moonah Tasmania and have found the the house is now demolished and units have taken its place.Funny thing is though I have also realised that this house many years ago also had an old barn at the back which was removed and placed in my husbands aunties paddock just down the road from where I live.My husband help remove it from 28 Charles Street to his aunts property about 20 years ago. ;D

Kate,
I feel I must point out an apparent error in your interpretation here which should be clarified.

The link to the legal advertisment regarding the estate.

I would say he was simply a trusted family friend of the family.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/25825511?searchTerm="thomas alfred probert"&searchLimits=

Fully quoted here for clarity----

"NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that after the expiration of fourteen days from the publication hereof application will be made to the Supreme Court of Tasmania in its Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction that Letters of Administration of the estate of THOMAS ALFRED PROBERT late of Moonah in Tasmania Retired Federal Ser- vant deceased intestate may be granted to THOMAS DAYMON PROBERT of Gladstone in Tasmania Labourer a son of the said deceased and CHARLES CLARENCE PITT of Moonah aforesaid Mechanic who have been appointed by the persons entitled to the estate of the said deceased to |
so apply.
"

INTESTATE means he did not leave a will.

The meaning is that THOMAS PROBERT and CHARLES C PITT were appointed by those entitled to the Estate to make application for letters of Administration.

It does not say these two were the sole beneficiaries at all.

Thanks again to you all for your help -I now know of six of the eleven children born to Thomas and Emily; only 5 to find!
I knew Thomas had died without a will, I just misinterpreted the document I had found; thanks for clarifying that.

Thank you, Johngirl. It all adds to my knowledge of my previously unknown Aussie relatives.  It's just a pity I didn't start this when my friend was a GP in Tasmania - I could have made use of him, but he's now in NSW!

Thanks to all your help, I've filled a lot of blanks in my Tasmanian Probert tree.  I've now come up with another problem. The electoral roll for 1954 shows Joyce Pauline Probert, a nurse, living with Neah Probert (also a nurse) in Campbell St, Hobart. Does anyone know who Joyce is/was? I can find no other reference to her.
Thanks, Kate

Joyce Pauline PROBERT appears on the electoral rolls in QLD from 1958-1980 which is the extant they are currently available online.
By checking those you will see who else is living at the same address.

Thanks Merlin (I think!)
This has opened a whole new box of tricks. Loads more Proberts, but I can't see how they're linked to the Tasmanian family! I assume they must be, somehow.
