Are there any records,on line, of prisoners in Walton Prison in 1917?
My OH's g.father was convicted of bigamy and sentenced to 9 months hard labour in July 1917
According to his army record was arrested in Ruthin.(being absent from the Manchester Royal Labour Corps)
I'm trying to establish the name of his 2nd 'wife'
Are there any local newspapers, on line, which might have carried the story?
Living in Devon a visit is not possible
Many thanks in advance for any help

Hi,
Not sure about anything being online but I would have a go at contacting Liverpool Records Office:-
http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/Leisure_and_culture/Libraries_and_archives/Contacts/index.asp
or possibly Lancashire Records Office at Preston (as Liverpool was in Lancashire at one time).

If there are records, you might not be able to access them yet because of the 100 year rule.
Best of luck

You should be able to establish the 2nd "wife"s name from the GRO index - see the similar case of George Henry Eastgate (who only got 4 months):

Hi,
In 2009, I asked about Walton Prison records at the National Archives, the Prison itself, Liverpool and LRO Preston and was told they do not hold them. Liverpool Library encouraged me to write to the local MP and see about access but as I live in U.S. I thought perhaps not my place. Still never really got an answer as to exactly where they are, just where they are not!
Anyway, thought I pass it on.

I went to Liverpool library yesterday and was told they do not have any records for Walton prison. I am looking for a woman, Elizabeth McCarthy, who gave birth to a daughter in Walton prison in July 1897. I resorted to looking at the Quarter Sessions and old copies of the Liverpool Echo but to no avail. I ran out of time so didn't manage to look at the Magistrate Court records.
