Title: Timmin(s), Smith, Connolly, Foy, McCabe, Cootehill
Post by: StickyToffee on Wednesday 17 February 10 22:29 GMT (UK)
I am finding it very difficult to trace any family in Cavan.  It's quite confusing with all the separate parishes, unions, baronies but what I do have is - my grandmother was Bridget Timmin who was born in County Cavan about 1877 to James Timmin, who was a farmer and to Ann Timmin, nee Smith.  Bridget had only one sister, Catherine (b 1865), known as Kate, who married James(?) Foy, in Kill.  At some point, Bridget came to Scotland where she met my grandfather, Patrick Connolly, who was from Aughnamullen, County Monaghan.  More confusion here as IGI show his parents as Peter Connolly and Anne McCabe, sometimes of Cootehill, Cavan! Going to post topic in County Monaghan as well as Cavan, hoping for some good luck.  Look forward to hearing from someone! Thanks.

More than likely they were RC.

Back in the early 1900s there was a shop/pub in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan with the name 'P. Timmins'. I have a photograph that shows the name clearly. However I'm afraid I have no other information.

Thanks for that - I know that my g-grandfather Timmin(s) was a farmer but it could be a family connection.  Will try to find out.  How difficult would it be for you to scan the photograph and attach it? Will try to find out how far Bailieborough is from Cootehill.  Thanks again.

You probably have this info by now but the family search site has a marriage record for James Timmin and Ann Smith on 2 Feb 1865 in Tullyvin Cavan Ireland. Bride’s father is Peter Smith and groom’s is James Timmon. I have been looking for a marriage of Ann Smith in this area but my Ann has father James and would probably have been younger than this one.

Thanks for that, tmr.  I had most of it and can get no further back!  Have you thought that perhaps the info you have could have mistaken the brides' fathers' names?  I have found a few mistakes on certificates when names have been spelt wrong or even the wrong name has been inserted.  Good luck
