I am looking for a Jane Dumbrell in the 1851 census, born in late 1815/ early 1816 in East Malling, Kent. May still be in the county at that time.

Hi Grump
I couldn't immediately see her in 1851 census. Is there any possiblity that she may have died - there is a Jane DUMBRILL death registered 1850 Malling registration district http://freebmd.rootsweb.com or is that somebody else?
If you think she should still be alive, perhaps you could give us another clue or two?

Dear Casalguidi
Thanks for taking the trouble to check. The Jane Dumbrell buried at West Malling was the mother of the Jane I am seeking. She is on the 1841 census, but I can find no reference to her after that. I suppose she may have emigrated; I haven't checked the records for America, but it doesn't seem as though she went to Australia. It's all a bit of a mystery, but thanks again for looking.

A bit more information about Jane Dumbrell (on 1841 census, but lost in 1851). There is no sign of her marrying in the interim, as far as I can see. Have looked at 1837online without success. In 1841, she was working as a servant for a wine merchant, John Bookham, in West Malling. Could she have emigrated to America?

She's certainly a mystery or hiding somewhere .................. have had several looks but still can't find her anywhere in 1851+ :(

Thanks for looking again, Casalguidi.
I can find no record of marriage or death and have explored some likely Janes born in East Malling and with a different married surname, without success. I suppose she may have emigrated, but haven't explored that possibility yet.
