This is my first post on the site, Hope I'm doing things right.
I'm looking for information on my grand dad, Angus Nicolson think he was brought up in Marishadder, Skye. He had a brother called Alastair Bahn Nicolson and he married Annie Stewart I think from Stafin. They had five children Morag died at 29 Edward, Donald, Alisdair who was a butcher in Lochranza, Arran, and John. I think he was in born in 1873.

Hi Nicolson5
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Might be a good idea to obtain your grandfather's marriage certificate to confirm the names of his parents :) This would let you work back with confidence on both his line and your grandmother's line.
Have you checked on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk the official pay to view site for Scottish BMDs and census images? You should hopefully be able to view the certificate on line to confirm details.
Have a look at this helpguide here on RC www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html
I would imagine that Sandy was Alexander by birth name?

This is all the info I have, found by chatting to relations...will have a look at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Thanks for the help
Oops it was Angus Nicolson.....head is spinning with names just now. My dads birth cert has angus nicolson and Annie Stewart as the parents....
-
Your dad's birth cert should include date and place of parents' marriage (info contained on Scottish birth certs from the early 1860s).
From SP, likely entry for marriage in 1907 so probably an earlier birth year for Angus than you thought. The full marriage entry will let you work back and identify Angus' birth and parents.

I will check this....My mother has the cert and we talked on the phone so will check myself. Had a look on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and I have a bit to learn.

I found he is buried in Cathcart cemetery is there an online check or do I go for a walk round the cemetery...?
-
I saw this new link that someone posted in the last few days www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GSvcid=6694&CRid=2164838&pt=Cathcart Cemetery&
However, it looks like Cathcart details have some way to go :-\
There is also this link www.memento-mori.co.uk which is dedicated 100% to Scottish cemeteries but Cathcart is also not yet on it.
I have no idea how big Cathcart cemetery is so not sure how easy it would be to just walk around and find a stone. It would probably help to make some enquiries to try and establish the lair number etc.

Will go for a walk and ask the guys who look after the place. Maybe they have a list. Thank you for all your help have put those sites in my favs.

Talking to relitives.....Angus Nicolsons father was Alexander Nicolson born 1841 and he had seven brothers and sisters they all stayed in Marishadder, Skye.
Where is the best place to check this info....?
-
It could be this family group, from the 1851 census:
Alexander Nicolson 53, Crofter 1 Acres
Christy Nicolson 24
Rachel Nicolson 21
Murdo Nicolson 18
John Nicolson 14
Janet Nicolson 12
Alenr Nicolson 9
John Nicolson 6
Alenr Nicolson 4
Alenr MacLeod 3, grandson
Janet MacLeod 6 Months, granddaughter
Address: Isle Of Hadda, Portree
As mentioned earlier, the best way to work back is to verify the key steps, births back to parents' marriage to their parents' marriage etc. :) If you at least verify those key facts then you can more confidently look at census entries and work out which are the family entries.

My name is Eddy Ross, my father was born in Marishadder.
I am 56, when I was 14/15 I went to my fathers cousin's house Donald Ross.
Donald was from Ellishadder and was married to Morag Nicholson from Marishadder.
Her father lived with them, his name was Alister bahn (Gaelic for fair Alister) I believe he was in hhis late 80's at that time.
To my knowledge he had 3 children.
Angus (Known locally as Big Angus) he moved away and died in Tebay, maybe 20 years ago,
Murdo (Known locally as Murdy) a nice man he lived in Maligar, died many years ago.
Morag, she lives in Marishadder and is in her 80's.
Her son also lives in a new house built in the village.
He is either Donald or Dugald, I always get them mixed up.

Curiously there is an Angus Nicolson who married Rachel Martin who died in Marishadder in 1869 aged 75 (see Scotland's People records). Her parents were Alexander Martin and Ann Lamont. They had a son John who was informant of his mother's death.
He appears to have died in 1864 aged 75 and his mother's name appears to be MacLean.

Son of Alexander and Marion Lamont I believe. Alex was a farmer at Marishadder she was from Snizort. Alex's parents were Angus/Rachel Martin her parents were Donald/Ann Nicolson. I have Nicolson's from Uig and Culnacnoc and found yours filtering through the dozens and dozens of Nicolson's in the area.
Download the registrations from Scotland's People you'll have fun.
