Hi
Could someone please answer me a question about adoption. I realise this is a tender subject in some families but if an adopted person knows their birth name (which has never been a secret) would there be a birth certificate available in the birth name?
It seem so me to be common sense for the answer to be 'no' as that would open the way to all sorts of problems, but what is the legal stance on this?

Not sure about the legal issues, but the answer is Yes there will be a birth cert for the
child that was named and registered at birth.
A friend of mine was adopted and knew her name at birth, from this I found her birth
mother and father and family who were all still alive.
Although she is now in touch with her half brothers and sisters her natural mother did not
want to know!! and is still blissfully unaware that her children know all about it!
A bit of a sad story really.
If you go down the route of tracing yourself, I would strongly advise contacting the adoption
authorities in order to view their records and circumstances of how the adoption came to take place.
They will also contact the natural parents and help to proceed further.

I agree with what has been said above - the birth will have been registered in the usual way, and the registration easily traceable if the original name is known. I too have helped a friend to order her birth certificate in this way, and there was no problem at all with ordering it.

Hi there,
I was adopted more or less from birth in 1981, so not sure whether this period is the one you want to know about, but I have no problems talking about it. :)
I have a birth certificate both in my adopted name AND the name that was registered just after my birth. For instance on the BMD records only my first registered name appears, and not my adopted name that I was given at 9 months old.
I didn't know my birth name but sent off for my original birth certificate to the GRO using my adoptive name and a few other details.
Legally my name is my adoptive name as this over-rides the name I was given at birth. However my first birth certificate will still be on record and an official document.
