I've been going on the British Library newspaper archive via Lancashire Library's remote access facility for ages now (by entering the barcode on my library card), but today I cannot get in at all. I get a message saying "your entry was not recognised as valid, access denied"
I phoned the library and they say the site is working. I dictated my barcode number to the library staff, and they could access the site with it, but at home I still cannot.
What could be causing this? I've tried clearing cookies and stored passwords but it hasn't made any difference. We have 2 computers at home (use Mozilla Firefox) and I've tried to access on both without success.

Have you tried using another browser like Internet Explorer for instance?
It might be browser related but if you have the same problem with IE then you can eliminate it as a possible cause of the problem.
-
Babara,
I am having the same problem!!!
I wonder if they have shut the door on us!
Alyson
-
....and me ???
Monica
-
....and IE makes no difference, still access is denied. I wonder what the problem may be?
-
and me.
Bit of a pain, won't even let me access Times Digital Newspapers. What has that got to do with Infotrac.
Lizzie
Modified I have found a UK e-mail address after some searching and have written to the UK Sales Manager to see what the problem is.
-
Just rang Lancs Library and have been told that there is some technical problems, I was directed to IT who did'nt
know anything about it, but are looking into it and will ring me back.
Keep you posted folks!
Cross your fingers the door is not closed for good!

Got an almost instant response to my e-mail
If you enter the password of tuesday instead of the Library card you should be able to access. Please note this is only a temporary change due to technical issues we are experiencing and we will advise the library when this has been resolved and Library Cards can be used again.
So good news all round, it is due to technical issues and they are not denying access to home users.

PHeeew!!!
Thanks for that Lizzie!
I just had a call back from Lancs IT dept and they don't understand what is going on!!!
I'm off to try and access now.
Alyson
-
And it works! I've just sent another e-mail now thanking them for the quick response and asking if tomorrow, I have to use wednesday as a password ???
-
And the reply re the password is:
Nope its valid until the 22nd February when these issues should be resolved.
So there it is, just use tuesday (without a capital t) to access the site and all is well.
Lizzie
-
Oh, no!!
Tuesday does'nt work for me!!! ???
Have tried every day of the week and still no luck!! ???
OK lizzie what favours did you promise to that nice man ? ;)
Alyson
-
Try it without the capital T, i.e. tuesday
Lizzie
-
Nope!....still no luck!
Did you give them your barcode no.? Perhaps they gave you a password that they linked to your barcode??
Alyson
-
No I just sent an e-mail to the UK Sales Manager - Always go right to the top is my motto. ::)
The response came from a solutions consultant with the following e-mail address:
emea.globaltech@cengage.com
Suggest you e-mail them and just say you can't access their site with your library password and is there a problem.

Hi,
I have just tried it via my Lancashire Library barcode and it appears to be working now.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the responses - I was so miserable about this I had to log out of Rootschat & go for a haircut! ;D
Not really, I was going anyway,,, 'tuesday' isn't working for me either, but at least now I know it isn't just me. Well done LizzieW - silly me thinking the library would know about any glitches in the library service ::)

I have never had a problem with the 19th century newspapers.Until yesterday when i couldn't log in because my barcode was invalid I know it isn't.Tried again this morning with same results,i then went to the library to get it checked and make sure it didn't need up-dating.It didn't, the man in the computer room then scanned my card into the computer I think :-\ and said i should be able to log in now.I have just tried it and my number is still invalid :( Has anyone any idea what the matter is? and is anyone else having this problem?

Rosie

Just checked and not working on my Cheshire Library Card >:(
Stan

Cheshire lost as well then stan, what do we do,just wait till its fixed?
Celia

I hadn`t realised that it was possible to access the British Library newspaper archives on line. Could someone please explain how this is done? Or is this a bad time to start?

for a quick reply if you find your local library website on-line (Mine is Cheshire)you will see what that library subscribs to.If you have a library ticket for that county library you can use the number on it.The barcode to log into the site of you interest from home
Celia
-
What I find interesting is that they know there is a problem and they know the issues will be fixed by 22 February. I wonder if they are updating the site or something. I can get in now, without even having to log on!! so that's a bit weird.

Just received a reply from Gale......it seems they are now passing the buck! It reads......You would need to direct your enquiry to the Library as we would be unable to verify if you should be accessing. There is a technical issue so if the library is not already aware of this can you advise them to email us.
Still awaiting return phonecall from Lancs Library who are oblivious and looking into it for me.
Talk about going round and round in circles!!!!
Alyson
-
Thats daft how can there be a technical issue in 3 counties and they are not aware of it ::)
Celia
-
I can't get in to 19th C Newspapers on Lancs site either by using Membership Number or tuesday.
Tried my Essex library link and it won't recognise my number but lets me in using tuesday!
Selina
-
I've just tried to access Infotrac via my Cheshire and Hull City library cards but I can't get in with either. Using a password of tuesday also doesn't work.
Ian.
-
Can't access through Wakefield Met. Libraries either.

Alyson

I have the site bookmarked and I don't even need to use my barcode library
no. for entry!!!!
I don't often have to use my number, only every now and then.I don't know if the difference is because there are 2 pages.1 for gales and the one for wirral libraries.
Celia
-
both Surrey and Lancs are fine for me <phew>
perhaps they have fixed the problem now.
-
Lancs library just rang me back.........
Gale are apparently having major technical issues but expect normality to resume from
22nd of this month, so things might be a bit trial and error until then.
