Title: Red Leader & Ardgowan Street
Post by: cheekywan on Tuesday 16 February 10 12:52 GMT (UK)
Hi
Hoping someone can help me with this, I have a William  McKinney and Charles McKinney both in the 1901 census living at 7 Ardgowan Street, Port Glasgow, both are married with families.  Both have occupations as Red Leader.

Can anyone tell me:

1.  What exactly is a Red Leader?
2. Was/Is 7 Ardgowan Street a tenement block of somekind?

Thanks for any help.
Heather

I've seen this come up before regarding the occupation red leader  :)

There are actually a total of 103 entries showing in 1901 for 7 Ardgowan Street, made up of numerous households. Safe to say it was most likely a tenement or multi-occupancy building I think!

Once again Elaine - thanks so much this solved a problem I had.

I had found a marriage cert for Daniel McKinney but the parents didn't match up, however I was looking at the wrong Daniel and realised this after I saw the Obits you provided as both Daniel McKinney's died in the same year.

I will keep a hold of this link, I've only just begun my search for McKinney's I've been putting it off for ages because it's so hard to find information about Irish descendants but so far, I've found them all here  :)

Monica!

Looks like your building of Multi - tenancy was right, according to a death certificate I have for Daniel McKinney he died in the Ambulance Room of Kingston Shipbuilding Yard, Ardgowan Street, looks like most of the inhabitants were working in the shipbuilding industry (in my search so far anyway).
