Matthias and Sophia CLEMO
Matthias CLEMO had 3 daughters, Ann born about 1825 in Bristol, Sophia born about 1831 in Bristol (according to several censuses) and Margaret baptised 28 Dec 1835 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and for which I have a copy of the Parish Record, on that her Mother's name is recorded as Sophia
In 1841 Ann and Sophia Jnr were living in Smith Street Birmingham with the Thackwell family (HO107/1141/6/19/30). Here, their surname is spelled CLEMOW. There is no sign of their parents nor of sister Margaret.
In 1851 Ann is married to John Bayliss, her sister Margaret, a spinster aged 17, is living with the family in Aston Street Birmingham HO107/2054/143/51. Sophia is married to Thomas Upton and is living at 35 Weaman Street in Birmingham HO107/2057/237/15 although on her marriage certificate her surname was recorded as CLEMENTS
The three girls can then be found on all subsequent censuses until their respective deaths and I have loads of info on their very large extended families past this point.
Margaret had an illegitimate daughter Kezia in 1856 and their surnames on the birth certificate are recorded as CLEMO.
I have been unable to find any other record of Matthias other than on the marriage certificates of the 3 daughters. In some cases the father is recorded as Matthias CLEMO and in others as Matthew CLEMO, (Margaret married twice). His occupation was a carpenter in all instances.
I have been unable to find any re-marriages for Matthias and Sophia nor death registrations in England although several years ago, on the old Family History Online site, I found a Parish Record in Bodmin for the baptism of a Matthew CLEMO on 14 Apr 1793 to a father Matthew and mother Ann and wonder if this is indeed Matthew the father of my family.
Where did they come from originally and what happened to them? Most CLEMOs lived in Cornwall and a lot emigrated to Australia but of course I can’t find them in either place.

Hi, Well I'm here if you want me!

Hi Devonblue,
I guess you have already checked out the death of Sophia Clemow in 1846 St Columb 9 30 (Mar qtr)?
Is she the Sophia Clemo who is in St Austell for the 1841 census?
-
what other variations of spelling for the surname are there do you know?
The Victorian death index 1921-1985 has
5 CLEMOW and 8CLEMOW surname entries
36 entries with mothers maiden name CLEMO,CLEMOW,CLEMON,CLEMONT none margaret, Annie or Sophia.
17 females nee CLEMO etc again no matches
Pioneer INdex 1937-1888 has a family born to William Clemo and Elizabeth Northey from 1856-1870 and several marriages but none match
A SOPHIA CLEMO and MARK POLLARD had a son in 1861 a possible this is the only entry.
1892 and 1895 SOPHIA CLEMOW and EDWARD SQUIRE GREGORY register 2 sons too old for your lady. Can't find a death for either yet. Others may
Deaths have several males with Cornwall as a birthplace
will keep exploring Australian records

If I remember correctly the Sophia in St Austell on several censuses was married to a William Clemo.
The death in St Columb can't be the St Austell one as she lived much longer. I don't have the certificate for the St Columb one, will check with my cousin who shares this research if she has it.
I don't have any other ideas for spellings, I think you've covered them all.

36 entries with mothers maiden name CLEMO,CLEMOW,CLEMON,CLEMONT none margaret, Annie or Sophia.
Sophia Jnr, Margaret and Ann all remained in Birmingham until their deaths respectively: Dec 1902, Jan 1917 and Mar 1906, They all married and were Sophia Upton, Margaret Acres and Ann Bayliss by then.

The Sophia I saw in 1841 was living with James,Joanna, Harriet, and John CLEMO. Her occupation was confectioner and she was 40 years old.
In 1861 she is living alone, a widowed pauper aged 63.
In 1871 she is lodging with Sophia GEORGE a widow and her children. Sophia CLEMO is aged 72, widowed with no occupation.
Cheers

In 1841 there's a Margrett Clymore with a family called Surman in Leckhampton which is in the Cheltenham district HO107 piece 353 book/folio 32 page 1, her age is given as four so slightly out but she could be worth a look at.
-
Sorry, ref should be HO107 piece 353 book 18 folio 32 page 1. On a different site she's transcribed as Margarette Clemman
-
That Margaret Clymore is certainly a possibility although I dont recognise the name Surman or any of the Christian names either.
I am having great problems with my ISP so may disappear.

Probably totally off course but is New Zealand a possibility? Lots of references to Clemo Clemow in Papers Past but just picked out three because of reference to England.
1882 Omata Marriage of William Henry Clemow to Elizabeth Starkey both of Brighton, England.
1917 Thomas Alfred Clemo (b 1875) found dead - had left a letter of goodbye to his brother and sister in England.
1841 James Clemo and wife on board William Bryan on list of early settlers.
-
Anywhere isa possibility as they can't be found!!
-
No deaths showing for Sophia or Matthew (Matthius) on NZ BDM :(
Annie

Thanks for looking anyway.
-
No obvious Clemo'sand variaations tjat would match (1 only) in convict records to Australia just thought I'd look as sometimes this was a cause for persons falling off teh map

This is a tough one :( Not even a Sophia Sophie marriage to a Matthias Matthew that looks anything at all near.
The only interesting thing I found was at www.distantcousin.com/other/nepabio Click on C and read about a Matthew Clemo b 1831 son of a Matthew Clemo and grandson of a Matthew Clemo. (The grandfather fought at the battle of Waterloo!)
Oh yes, one other thing that may be useful - CuriousFox- free to join. There is an offer on there to look up marriages in Fowey, Cornwall pre 1837.

I just read that and found out it was about a Matthew son of JOSEPH and grandson of a Matthew.
However take this with the info about a baptism I found in Bodmin in 1793 for a Matthew son of Matthew and Ann and I think this may be the same family.
I have never seen this info from Pa before so it is def worth a further investigation.
Did the parents go there I wonder??
-
Tried Castle Garden and Ellis Island - cannot find them on a ship but the early lists are not complete
-
Thanks to everyone who has helped. Seems I still have a real brickwall. :(
