Hi there,
I have been researching my family tree for a number of years now, and have hit a dead end. The earliest relative I can find is Gregory Castle born 1620 in Norton Hertfordshire. He married Elizabeth Warner 17th March 1647/8. I know he has a brother William, who also married, but I am unable to research any further, as I don't know where else to look. I am a member of ancestry, and have used familysearch to get this far, along with freebmd. Does anyone know of any other sites for this far back that I can use.
Your input would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks
Julie

Hi,
Have just come across your message. My ancestor also Gregory Castle of Norton. Can I help in any way.
-
Hi Petercas,
I just wondered if anyone has managed to go any further than Gregory, or even has information about his possible siblings, as I am at a dead end now. I have found many family members I did not know existed through various sites, but am at a loss now to continue.
Thanks
Julie.

Hi Julie,
Guess I've got to post this before I am allowed to use the personal message system. Have traced probable parents/siblings for Gregory in Stotfold, Bedfordshire, which is just about a mile from Norton. Gregory's son, Willliam, moved from Norton to next door Baldock and was prob the first Castle in that town as I cannot find any Castle entries in the Baldock Parish register prior to his arrival. My ancestors come down that line and some later moved to Letchworth when the Garden City was completed. Some moved back to Norton.
Gregory married again following the death of Elizabeth, who died probably giving birth to Martha, but he died very soon after this second marriage.
Have read the Norton/Baldock/Stotfold parish registers several times but I've no doubt I still have a lot to do. I guess its a question of how deep you want to go into cousin lines and sometimes I think I've perhaps gone over the top. Ah well!!!
Hope to hear further from you and most interested to see where you come into the tree.
Regards
Peter

AAAAH my long lost Uncle Peter, hello, i have been trying to contact you for such a long time, is it possible we can chat sometime?
I am your Nephew from Martyns side :)

Welcome!
How lovely that you and Peter have managed to find eachother. :)
As RootsChat is primarily a site dedicated to family history and not recent events, it may be better for you to discuss any recent family business by Personal Message and not on the board. You will need to have made at least 3 posts to be able to use the system.

You are very welcome to exchange family history in excess of around 100 years on the boards though.
Best Wishes
Rick :)

Charles Castle, a master baker, b. Ware 1824, son of Joseph and Susannah of Ware, married Emma Vyse 1845 in Hertford. They had at least 9 children, one being Robert George Castle born 1848 in Ware. Are you researching the same line by any chance? Regards Amanda

Hi Carolinesophia,
Yes, it is the same line, though I came down through Charles' brother, John William Castle.

Thank you Juliepen!
Coming down Charles' line, I have Robert George Castle b. 1848 married Mary Ann Brown, their son George C Castle b. c 1877 married Florence Ethel Adams and left Hertford for Islington where daughter Ursula Winifred was born in 1914. Would you llike any further details of this line?
I would appreciate details of Joseph Castle's wife Susannah if you have them. She must have been born about 1806. Any details further back would be most welcome!
I don't have much to offer in return unless you are looking for any Australian connections (I am in New South Wales)

My family hail from the Baldock/Norton /Walkern area. Several generations of John Castle and they seemed to live in the Norton end area of town for quite a while
Do any researchers on here have info about Norton End and the kinds of folk who lived there? My female relatives were straw plaiters and one of the Johns (1826) was a victualler and agricultural labourer. I find that odd - him having two jobs. Would he have brewed and sold from home or would he have worked in one of the breweries.
I plan to visit the area later this year and wondered what became of the land. I'd like to be a bit prepared before I arrive
I've got back to 1790s and wondered if anyone has come across this branch of the family in their reseach.
Thanks

Hi KarenE and WELCOME TO ROOTSCHAT :)
HALS Online Names carries 2 items re a will (1824) of John Castle Maltmaker. (sounds really promising)
Norton - The Three Horse Shoes seems to have been run by the Chamberlain Family almost exclusively from 1790 thru to 1902
1790 - 1824 Clarke C (Victuallers Recognizance on HALS)
1825 - 1828 Elizabeth C (Victuallers Recognizance on HALS)
1828 - 1840 ?
1841 - 1851 No Victuallers / Beerhouses listed in Norton
1861 - 1902 Various Chamberlain (Census / P.O.Dirs / Kellys)
It was quite a common sideline/2ndincome for people to run BeerHouses (as opposed to a "full" public house), brewing their own beer(s). Quite often the OH carrying out the brewing.

"Norton End" is a name commonly seen in historical information on Baldock but is no longer in use, nor is their a modern name instead. It was the poorest area in Baldock and was situated around the junction of Church Street and Norton Road as far as the Orange Tree Pub In the nineteenth century, the majority of "Norton End", consisted of yards and courts of cottages hidden away behind the Church Street junction, but there was also an island of cottages in the middle of the junction of Norton Road with the road to Norton Village. The present Church Street was originaly called Well Street. By 1700 it was being called Norton Street and by 1897 the south end towards Norton End was called Church Street The whole road followed in 1912 The present Norton Road was originaly called Back Lane. By 1906 it had been renamed Cemetary Road and by 1930 it was being called Norton Road.
Baldock had a number of Breweries. Steeds Brewery which later became the Baldock Pale Ale Brewery was located in Norton End, and John may well have worked there.
My great grandmother - Sarah Gentle(Nee Howard) was a strawplaiter living at Norton End. I can trace her back to Gregory and Elisabeth Castle (Nee Warner). If anyone has any information about them, I would be very grateful.

Thanks for your input Stevew.
What you say doesnt surprise me - the few pictures I have seen seem to suggest a poor area. I am guessing it must have been cleared sometime towards the end of the 19C
-
My great grandmother moved into one of the new houses by 1902. I think it was mainly cleared by 1930 when Cemetary Road was renamed Norton Road.
I believe that there is still a road named Brewery Road after Steeds Brewery.

Hi Steve,
