Title: Dothan Place, Newbury
Post by: PaulGT on Monday 15 February 10 19:25 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know where Dothan Place in Newbury was located.
My G Grandmother lived there before she was married (it is her address on the Marraige certificate) but i have never heard of it.

I'd be grateful if any one could shed light on it please.

Thanks very much
PaulGT

Dothan Place is off the east side of Cheap St - almost opposite Market St.  The entrance is still there though all the cottages are gone.

Wonderful!
I had no idea that any evidence of it would still exist. I will be down there at the weekend with the camera.

Many thanks for your assistance.

I also have ancestors who lived there, do you know anything about the history of the place?  Some of them lived in Jack Street which I know was quite a grim place, but I have found no info on Dothan Place.  Quite a few also lived down Northcroft Lane.

Hi
I know nothing about the place except that my g grandmother Mabel CARTER (1883-1974) lived there at the time of her marriage and presumably her parents too (Alfred and Elizabeth CARTER). I still need to check on the parents.

I thought I would say who my family were in case we were looking at the same people.

Hi Paul,

My 3x great grandparents lived at 1 Dothan Place in 1881, but by 1891 they had moved to Gordon Terrace, also in Newbury.  They were William Giles and Sarah Ann Alder.  Looks like we have no connection, but it's quite likely that our ancestors were neighbours!

Best of luck with your research

Thanks for those links, it is hard to imagine Jack Street looking like that now - it looked so long!  I find pictures like these help bring your family tree to life, you can imagine a bit more about how they lived.  With all the changes in town it is easy to forget how things once looked.    :)

For those that would like a view of Jack Street today (well  - a few months ago):

Perhaps it is also worth pointing out that the second picture on Bob Willis' site is actually Marsh Lane - with shadows of Jack St on the wall.
