Title: Elizabeth Crawford death/Elizabeth Cumming birth
Post by: redbook on Monday 15 February 10 13:38 GMT (UK)
Hello

I'm hoping someone out there can help me piece this puzzle together. It concerns my GGG Grandmother, one Elizabeth Crawford, and her daughter. Basically, I cannot find either Elizabeth Crawford's death, or her daughter's birth.

Here is what I know:
Elizabeth Crawford was born April 20 1818 in Coillimore, Arran to William Crawford and Margaret Hendry.
She married Alexander Cumming on December 06 1839 at Coillimore.
Their first child was John, born December 21 1840.
Second child was Margaret, born August 24 1842.
Third child (and my ancestor) was Elizabeth Cumming, born c.1844/5.

It gets complicated now - when their second child Margaret is born it says 'domissy'(?) above the mother's name. Does this mean that she alone will be looking after their child? (Image attached)

Then, on December 27 1845 Alexander Cumming marries again to Rebecca Bain. The marriage cert, being an OPR, has no reference to him being a widower.

In the 1851 census the children are living with Elizabeth Crawford's Sister, Margaret Beaton, in Lochranza. They are Margaret Cumming, 7 and Betsey Cumming, 5. Their brother John is living elsewhere.

In 1862 Margaret Cumming marries James Hendry in Lochranza. On the marriage cert, she states her mother Elizabeth Crawford being deceased.

So, I know for sure that by 1862 Elizabeth Crawford has died. Though if her husband remarries in 1845 then she probably would have been deceased before this. Plus the fact that I cannot find a birth cert for their daughter Elizabeth is a bit odd. Or is it possible that the birth was never registered?

I hope someone out there can shed any light on to this!

Many thanks

Is the marriage of Alex Cumming to Rebecca Bain the same one that is recorded in Both Ayr and Clackmannan 13th January 1846?

If so is the entry you have possibly the Banns being read? It might be worth checking the other entries to see if they state anything further (such as widower).

Have you tried looking for MIs for this family?

Hi KirstyG

I have both certificates - the dec45 is the banns. Jan13 1846 is the actual marriage date.  No mention of being a widower. MI's is one avenue I haven't looked at yet -that's a good idea.

Thanks

Unfortunately it doesn't appear that any death records were ever kept by any of the churches on Arran, so that may be your only hope unless there are lair records held separately.

Have you tried the Kirk Session minutes?
Held by the NAS

I am intrigued by the word above Betty Crawford. It could tell you a lot about the family depending what it means.
Maybe you should post it on the Handwriting Decyphering board and see what they make of it.

Hi Kirsty

I've seen that site, and emailed the person over a year ago but they never got back to me.

Thanks for your help though. While I'm on, I mentioned in my first post about the word 'domissy', and attached an image of the word. This was concerning the daughter Margaret. Do you know if this means that the Mother would be solely responsible for the child? I've seen the word 'domicary' used on birth certs concerning a father before, and thought perhas it was something similar.

p.s. just saw your new post, and have written about the very word above! Haven't tried the Kirk Session Minutes, no. You're a goldmine of info!

I can't read the word, but I wonder whether it might mean that she died in childbirth (although it doesn't look like 'partus' or 'puerperium' or any other word I know to do with childbirth). Her husband certainly married pretty soon after the birth.

Hi rjknott

Thanks for the reply - they had another child in 1844/45, 2 years after the one in the image, although I cannot find any birth record for her. She always stated in census and marriage certs that her mother was Elizabeth Crawford. It could be possible that she died giving birth to the Elizabeth in 1844/5, and then the husband remarries in the December of 1845. A mystery!

Sorry; I hadn't read your original posting closely enough and thought the writing was on Elizabeth's baptism.

I see that an Elizabeth CRAWFORD died on 4 Nov 1843 in Bute (Cumbrae) but I have no idea what her age was.

That's ok,

I have the death you are speaking of, but it's for the rent of the mortcloth for a child, cost 4 shillings. I've attached the image. Thanks again.
