Title: Victoria.BC
Post by: karen13 on Monday 15 February 10 10:23 GMT (UK)
Hi all
Need some enlightment please.. ???
I have a couple of rellies who have passed away sometime in the 1990's - only location info i have is that they still have family in the Victoria area so im guessing they lived in that area too.
Do i have much chance of finding a death record or obituary?

Currently death registrations from British Columbia are only available up to 1989. Privacy laws cover deaths from 1990 to present. Online obituaries for Victoria newspapers appear to start in 2002. Perhaps one of our BC Rootschatters may know if there are any obituary databases for Victoria that cover the 90s. Needless to say, without a date of death it would be difficult to find an obituary if one was published.

Hi Karen,

If you know which cemetery your rellie is buried in you can contact that cemetery's administration and ask them to contact the family for you for them to contact you. You will likely have to prove your contection to this person. Most administrations will not provide that info directly to you for the more recent individuals, in adherence to privacy regulations. I hear the Vancouver Public Library (which covers all of BC) is very good at finding obits. This might give you some direction too. Hope this helps.

Thank you both for your information. Knew this one was going to be tricky..
I will take on board both your comments and do a bit more digging for information.

Thank you for your time

I was at Ross Bay cemetery last week looking for graves.

If your rellies are there, they should be in this look-up:  http://web.victoria.ca/archives/rosssearch.asp

It's a beautiful cemetery on the water and it has a wonderful history.  Lots of famous Canadians are there.  If you do find family there, let me know and I can send you pictures.  I am not there now, so I cannot take pictures of your graves, but I can send you general pictures of the cemetery.

The way that this could help you find people today is that you may get a date for their death and then you when to look for obits, which may mention surviving family.  The Victoria newspaper is the Times Colonist.

Hi Karen 13,
I live in Victoria so if you find that your family are in Ross Bay I can take pictures for you. Just let me know if you find anyone.
Cheers Lynd
