Thank you very much Sharon
You may be right - I have just been looking at a good map of Wiltshire - and it is close.
Is there any info in regard who his parents are??
I think he must have moved to Berkshire when he was an adult as I find him married - 1839- in Boxford Village, Berkshire with four children.
His wife is listed as Mary - no surname. Perhaps she came from Boxford Village?

Hi,
Do you have the family in the census? I note in 1851 they are living at the Village of Boxford. George born Manningford Bruce (son in Law). Mary is listed as b Boxford. (" wife) The head of the house is George PUZEY b Boxford
I had to wonder about this - There is a George Puzey from Boxford ends up in Australia wife Lucy Pearsall LEANARD. At marriage in London in 1852 he lists his father as George PUZEY maltster.
sorry its 204 pages PDF fale so takes a while

alas in the 1851 George is an ag lab pauper
I was a bit disallusioned till I looked at 1841 and I am sure it has to be them because - we have George and Mary ROBERTS and theire daughters Mary and Martha and right next door we Have George and Martha PUSEY and family (ag lab) and family including a son George 14 ;)
Cheers Kris :)

Hi queenie3,
Looks like he married Mary PUSEY/PUZEY ;D
1851 Census
HO107/1685/642/10
Boxford, Berkshire
Geo PU?EY ( indexed as Puzey), 68, Head, Widow, Ag lab/pauper, born Boxford
Danl Pusey, 21, Son, Unm, School Master
GEO ROBERTS, 45, Son-in-law, Ag, lab, born Wiltshire, Maningford
Mary, 39, Wife, Mar
Mary L, 12
Martha, 10
Hannah, 8
William, 6
George, 2
All others born Boxford
You must be very careful here as they may have married abt 1830 as they may be more children that have left home by 1851 Census. Also they may have both been widowed before marriage.
Cheers,
Trish

These Boxford records are not online so would pay you to post for them on the Berkshire board. There is a George ROBERTS married in Newbury Dec 1837 but no Mary and FreeBMD is missing one female party. I have tried looking for a Mary PUZEY/PUSEY to correspond in the images but no luck so perhaps although Newbury is the correct district for Boxford this is not the correct marriage or else Mary was previously married. Perhaps as Trish mentioned the marriage was earlier than 1837 although there are only the 2 young girls in 1841 so this marriage would appear to fit. :-\
I was hoping Mary could be found to fit that 1837 marriage as being after civil registration began we would have George's fathers details.
The baptism mentioned by Sharon is available ion the IGI parents Charles and Harriot (extracted record)
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
But I would like to see Manningford Bruce checked - its not online either I am afraid. These names have not been used for the children whereas George Mary and Martha have been. There are 2 more children by 1861 Emma and John.
Cheers Kris :)

Many thanks to you both!
I do have the 1861 census for Boxford - George Thomas - Head of family -age 55 - Shepherd/Agricultural labourer. His wife Mary- can't read her age [49??] and daughter Martha age 20 -formerly general servant, son William - age 16 - groom, son George - age 12 - shepherd boy/agricultural labourer, daughter Emma - age 10 - scholar, son John -age 6 - scholar.
Re Mary Roberts eldest daughter of George Roberts and Mary - perhaps married or working away from the family home?I will post on the Berkshire site to see if I can 'catch' Mary Roberts and see where/what she is doing.
Re the marriage Dec 1837 in Newbury - it sounds about right - I think I picked up some information that indicated the marriage might have taken place in 1839 but I can't see where I got the date from. In the past my record keeping was less than spectacular.I wish the census records went back to 1800, don't you?

Hi Carolyn,
Yes Mary appears to me to be aged 49 in 1861. (29 in 1841 and 39 in 1951)
Quite consistant, therefore we will be looking for a baptism for Mary PUZEY/PUSEY around 1812 in Boxford and the marriage of George PUZEY to Martha? prior to that time. George is 60 and Martha is 58 in 1841 so I expect Mary was their firstborn. 1841 all at home are under 14. Also a possible marriage for George ROBERTS to Mary PUZEY/PUSEY.
Here is the marriage entry for George I think is Mary's brother.
PUZEY George, of full age, a bachelor, a mariner, of Aldgate, father George PUZEY - maltster = LEONARD Lucy Pearsall, a spinster, of full age, of Aldgate, father George Valentine LEONARD - licenced seller in tea, by licence, 9 Dec 1852 at the parish church of St Botoph, Aldgate.
both signed, witnesses George Valentine LEONARD and Anne Groves ANTHONY
I note in the material I found earlier in Australia lists one of George's occupations as a mariner
Hope the Berkshire Board can help. At least we have Mary's name now.
Cheers Kris :)

George PUSEY was buried in Boxford 9 Jul 1859 aged 78
Martha PUSEY 1 Aug 1841 aged 50 :-\
Daniel PUSEY was buried 31 Aug 1851 aged 21
Cheers Kris :)

Hey Guys
Sorry to chime in a lil late. My G G G G Grandfather was Jacob Roberts. He was from Manningford England. His fathers Name was George. Jacob and his wife Mary never came here to Australia until late in life. It appears he was around 42 when he decided to take the boat with 8 or so kids and a wife already 7 months pregnant. (lost the child at sea). Very little is known about him or his father George but records show Jacob as a Lawyer or such and George, his Father as a carpenter. Can anyone sged some light?

Hi All
perhaps there is something in what Ian says, its probably all down to dates, we could basically get to 1837 or there abouts we can check UK Records Office details as well as Census 1841 1851,
that would shed light on who is who, especially if we can confirm when Jacob arrive would help,
The only reason i say this is i was contacted by one of the Descendants of John Roberts b. 1820 and he had read a book of Roberts family history in Australia and it suggested that in all 5 of the Roberts / Rabbitts children had migrated to Australia.
So it might not be children, but some grandchildren instead

An English Census still has him in Manningford in 1851 but for some reason he decided to travel to Australia late in his life with a wife 7mths Pregnant and a bunch of children.
he Departed South Hamptden, England 10th April 1853 aboard the COROMANDEL and arrived in Hobart Tasmania, Australia 18th July 1853.
He was accompanied by his wife Mary Ann (Saunders) whom he had married November 1837
The Children were
William, Sydney, Jane, Ann, George, Sarah and Matilda.
Hope this helps.
