Title: Two names -one marriage!
Post by: Immortal Druid on Friday 12 February 10 21:06 GMT (UK)
I am a little confused (not difficult I know lol) . Whilst researching a close family member I found a record of their marriage. As all parties concerned are still alive I am using psuedonyms!

Ms Alpha married Mr Beta in the 1980's
Mr Beta however had been born with the surname Charlie. He informed Ms Alpha that he had changed his name by deed poll.

The marriage record for the period reads

Mary Alpha  Spouse name Beta location reg number 456
Mary Alpha  Spouse name Charlie location reg number 456
So wifes name is same, but spousal name is different, though both relate to the same man iyswim. Why would this be? Could it be that he did not change his name legally? Incidentally both the first names on the records match, although he was named something different on his birth cert!
 Confused? Join the club :D

Any ideas why this would be?

Hi

Two possibiities spring to mind.

1.  The marriage details contain something like "Mr Beta previously known as Mr Charlie", and the record indexing system shows this;

2.  The record indexing system indicates if a marriage partner's surname is different from the father's surname - this would usually apply to women who had previously been married as women traditionally change their surname to that of their husband.  In your case Mr Beta's surname would be different from his father's surname due to the deed poll.

Kind regards
Gaie

Thats great thank you Gaie. I am guessing its the former as her maiden name which is different again (she had been married before) is not shown!  :)

 Thanks for the explanation :)

Hi Immortal Druid,

I have the same sort of thing with my father He changed his name by deedpoll when his mum remarried but when he married my mum two years later his orginal name was used on the marriage cert not his new name
