Duncan McDonald is a G5 ancestor on my father's mother's side. I believe he was born in 1763 in Moidart, Inverneshire and died on 16 February 1857. I think he was married to Margaret McPherson and I think the children were Archibald, Angus, Angus Dougal, Alan, Alexander, Donald, John, Peter, Mary, Margaret, and Anne.
I would appreciate any info regarding Duncan's ancestors.
I am living in Melbourne, Australia and could provide further info to anyone who is interested in the Australian branch of Duncan McDonald.

Hi,
Did he die in Scotland? If so his death cert would give his parents names and you can get that online off Scotlandspeople.

Hi Rainbowuk & thanks,
My Duncan McDonald died in Australia (Mohawk Station, Maclaughlan River, NSW) on 16 February 1857. I'll have another go at the Australian death sites.

Hi WASL
This provides some family info that might help www.monaropioneers.com/nimmitabel/pioneers/mcdonald-duncan.htm
The family are showing here as Roman Catholic so it will be harder to find out historical details about them as most of the info for this period relates to the established Church of Scotland (presbyterian). By the look of it, the family also look to have left Scotland just before the first census in 1841.
You might want to check the recently available records on Scotlands People for Roman Catholic Baptisms to see if anything may show there. RC Marriages are due to be released on the site early this year.
I lost many many months of my life researching MacDonalds in Moidart who were also Roman Catholic ;D You have probably come across this site already, but just in case you haven't www.moidart.org.uk
Monica :)
Added: There are also numerous member family trees on this line on Ancestry and a LDS submitted Pedigree file with contact details on Family Search www.familysearch.org

Thanks MonicaLesl,
I had come across the monaropioneers site and this was very helpful in making the links between my paternal grandmother and Duncan. Interestingly, sometime in Australia there was a switch from Catholic to Protestant.
Thanks for the other two sites to look at.

Hello Wasl,
Duncan McDonald was my wife's 4th great grandfather on her mothers side, which runs through Donald McDonald + Catherine McDonald to == Ann McDonald + Thomas McAlister to == Catherine McAlister + John Michael Cuningham to== John Thomas Cunningham + Martha Stein to== Brenda Cunningham + Vincent Frederick Heaton to== Margaret, my wife. I have just found the Monaro site in the past few weeks which hastened my search along Quite a bit. I have a lot of information on those families I have mentioned as well as other connecting families. A lot of the McDonalds went to the area around Mohawk Station which is near Nimmitabel/Cooma. Our Donald McDonald and the McAlisters, Steins and Cunningham's all lived north of Goulburn, making Goulburn their main Centre. One of the McAlisters wrote a book which covered a lot of history for that area specifically and Southern NSW generally, from about 1820 till 1905. The book is available to download from the NLA site. I am in Queensland and we may be of help to each other.
I look foreward to hearing from you.===

Hi everyone who has contributed to this forum,
I am the great great great grandaughter of Allan McDONALD who came to Australia on the William Nicol in 1837. For years I have been trying to find where Allan was born. He married Annie McDONALD before leaving Scotland via the Isle of Skye.
Tonight I was advised by a researcher that Allan was born in Oct 1810 in Kinlochmoidart, Inverness, Scotland. I surprised by this information as I have spent many years trying to find it. So I have decided to check it out and found that the information came from a rootsweb page.
It lists Allan as the son of Duncan McDonald and Margaret McPherson. As the links are followed down the marriage of Allan's son Angus to Mary Lulham is listed. That information is correct as I have there marriage certificate for a marriage 25 April 1860 in Brookfield NSW.
The page also list Angus as having a brother, Allan Jnr who I have no record of at all. There were other brothers and sisters but no Allan as far as I know.
So my problem really comes down to this page that is out there. The other thing is that I have Allan's death certificate and it lists his parents as Isabella Cameron and Alexander McDonald. Admittedly, Allan died in Inverell and the only family with him, apart from his wife were his daughters who lived in the area. I guess it means questioning again the validity of the information regarding his parents.
We live on the North Coast of NSW and have always known of the Monaro McDONALDS, have always been told we were related but with no proof...
So I guess I am wondering if anyone has any insight into the Allan listed as Duncan and Margaret's son? I am also keen to know how to contact people who submit files to rootsweb.
Any help/advice would be gratefully received.
Cheers ???

Hello CWAY, we have met and exchanged documents. My wife is also a gggrandaughter of Allan, through Christina Mooney. She came with her parents and six siblings on the William Nicol in 1837. I can still name only four of Christina's siblings on board, and four born in NSW.
Our Allan died in 1876 at age 86 according to his daughter Flora Moy. That would mean he was born about 1790. Could the Allan born in 1810 be a son of your gggf? He married Ann at age 36 but was he married earlier?
I received two e-mails from Cyprus last night through MyHeritage. One linked me to this site. The other led me to a list of all immigrants to Australia from Inverness -- except those on the William Nicol

Hi All & especially cway & denmath,
I have been researching the McDonalds that arrived on the William Nicol in 1837 on and off for years, especially Allan & Annie and their 7 children, in particular Angus & Donald.
Angus married Mary LULHAM and my g grandfather was John LULHAM, Mary's brother.
The family stories that I have heard are similar...that there was connections with Goulburn area and that Donald and Angus were half brothers. I feel sure that there was an prior marriage before Ann/ie
Donald died in 1910 at Casino, same year and place as Angus and Donald's mother isn't listed, just his father Allan.
There are a lot of trees out there with info that I wondered where it came from. I was pleased to read that you have their father's death certificate stating that his parents were Alexander & Isabella Cameron and that he was 86 when he died...supports that info.
There is a death for a Donald McDonald in 1865 at Goulburn and father is Alexander (no mother). On Ancestry there is an Assisted Immigrant Passenger record for a Donald McDonald arriving in Australia in Jan 1839, born c1804 (but it says born Ross-shire which is next to Inverhess-Shire)and parents Alexander and Bell Cameron. He arrived on the Lady McNaughton....Now, I wonder if this is the Goulburn connection that we have all hear about?
There were 3 Donald McDonalds that came out at the same time and one of them lost their wife during the trip...I had always though that one of these would have been a brother to Allan????
I haven't had any luck though finding the births for any children for Allan * Annie after they arrived in Australia, except for possibly Anne in 1847 in Maitland region so am wondering where you found the others please?
I think I can name the 7 children and deaths but not all births......Scottish records aren't the best to search especially with such a common name as McDonald/MacDonald/McDonnell.
The McDonalds:
Father: Allan b c1790
Mother: Ann b c1804
Donald b 1824 d18.11.1910 Casino, NSW
Allan b c1830 d 20.10.1888 Silverton, NSW married Eliza CUNDY and I found 13 children 1860 Aberdeen NSW (A lot about Allan on Trove)
-
oops...pressed the wrong button somewhere there lol
to finish off the McDonalds;
Allan b c1790 died 1876 Inverell
Ann b c1804 died 1888 Inverell
Donald b 1824 died 1910 Casino, NSW, married Mary McKENZIE 1860 Raymond Terrace, NSW
Allan b 1830 died 1888
Christina Theresa b c1833 died 1914 Tingha, NSW married Dennis MOONEY
Angus b 1835 died 11.02.1910 Casino, NSW married Mary LULHAM
Flora Agnes b 1837 (about 4 weeks before they left Scotland I read somewhere) died 1912 Tingha married James MOY
Catherine b ? died 1872 Morpeth, NSW, ...didn't marry
Ronald Robert b ???? and died 1875 at Inverell, NSW....didn't marry
I have had a good look at the Monaro site as well and most of those McDonalds came out on the British King...were you able to find any of them with a William Nicol connection?
There are just so many of them with the same christian name and gets so very confusing.
I would love some feedback re my posting......have no idea if I am on the right track here.....2 or more heads are better than 1
Cheers, Barbara :)

Hi WASL,
I come out of some Macdonalds not far from Moidart in Knoydart Inverness shire. It is slightly north of your ancestors. You go north from Arisaig to Mallaig and catch a ferry over to Inverie on Loch Nevis. some extended family Macdonalds left after Culloden in 1845 but my direct line didn't leave until 1786 when they took a ship called Macdonald to Glengarry Canada with their parish priest. In 1872 my McDonald descendant settled in Michigan USA and in 1976, I moved to Melbourne, Australia where I currently live. Wanted to say G'day. I am not sure yet exactly how and when my Macdonalds came to Knoydart. They referred to themselves as the Macdonalds of Loupe. I am investigating if they came from Kintyre. Let me know if you want to be in touch.

hello Cousins: I am looking at this Duncan M(a)cDonald of Moidart to determine if he had a brother Donald of Moidart. My GGGGGrandfather Donald was b.c.1770 and had a son Duncan (b 1805).
Does anyone have the lineage of this Duncan , his father and siblings?

It is available at archive.org. This link will take you to a 2016 version which seems to be the last version stored. I tested one of the links in the menu, it worked.
