Am looking for information of the Spong family whose children were baptised at St peters, Woking 1825 - 1831.
Is anyone able to help please?
-
Hi Satchwell
What kind of information are you after?? Do you have Census returns from 1841 to 1911 for them? Marriages for the children you mention?? Or is the parents and back that you need? ;D
Cheers

Hi Karenlee,
Parent's names Henry Spong & Elizabeth (no maiden name given)
Children's baptised at St Peter Woking were as follows:
Jane 4/5/1823; James 29/5/1825; Harriet 3/6/1827; Eliza 23/8/1829; Sarah 25/9/1831 Mary Ann 13/7/1834 & Emma 31/7/1836
I believe Hariet, Eliza, Sarah & mary Ann may have been living in a workhouse in 1841 but haven't found them on census.
Jane married William Windiate in 1845, Bradford, Yorkshire - immigrated to NZ
Eliza married Henry Dyke 1852 in Northfleet, Kent - immigrated to NZ
Mary Ann married James Wells 1856 Woking - lived in Woking
I am looking for Elizabeth's surname and where Henry & Elizabeth were born and any records for the deaths or marriages of James, Sarah (may have married Daniel Harding) & Harriet (may have married George Bullen) & Emma
May thanks

Hi Karenlee
Many, many thanks indeed.
Someone else had suggested that marriage, but had only given me names & I hadn't had time to try and buy a copy of the document.
The death of Henry in 1837 may well be correct one and be the reason the girls were in a workhouse. I believe James possibly died in 1827 but have to check that further. It's a lot to ask but are you able to find the girls on the 1841 census, I sure hven't hd any luck.
You've made my day and I really appeciated your help.

I have found a marriage for a Harriet SPONG to Aaron BEESON. There is no christian name for the bride's father... just SPONG occupation labourer. Witnesses are Moses BURNLANE I think and Caroline SPONG.
Did a search for Caroline SPONG on the Census and found 2 possibles but neither with a sister Harriet. Do you know of any family connection with Caroline??

Hi Karen
referring to the marriage between Harriet Spong and Aaron Beeson. I have not come across a Caroline Spong, but it is possible she could have been a cousin. With giving the marriage a second look.

HI
Not sure if there is any conection with the Spong family in my wife's tree
Mary Ann Bisley b 1828 in Bisley, her father William was b in Farnborough, but the family originated from Chobham, and there some considerable detail in a hisory of Chobham ofthis family.
-
Hello Stonechat
Thank you for your reply.
I have come across the Spong family in Chobham but as yet have not made a connection with my family in Woking.
-
Morning
Had another look at the marriage for Harriett.... this time I used both BEESON and SPONG in the search.... and there were 2 marriages. It appears that brothers may have married sisters. On the other marriage ( Rachel SPONG was bride ) the bride's father was James SPONG.
So I went back to the baptisms and found a Rachel and a Caroline to a James and Maria SPONG, but not a Harriett ( well not yet anyway ).
On that evidence, I am unwilling to rule her out completely as being "your" Harriett, maybe James and Henry were brothers??
Perhpas stonechat might be able to shed some light here...??
Cheers

Hi Karenlee
Looks like our Sarah's death but can't tie in the marriage of Harriet with our family.

I believe that you have been discussing two families not one. The family of Henry and Elizabeth SPONG, and the family of John and Sarah SPONG. The Eliza SPONG who married Henry DYKE is I believe the daughter of John SPONG baptised 3-6-1832 at St Peter's Woking, not the Eliza SPONG daughter of Henry and Elizabeth who was in the Guilford workhouse with her sisters in 1841. In 1841 Eliza SPONG was living at Hook hill Woking with her parents and 8 siblings. In 1851 Eliza SPONG was in service in Northfleet Kent where Henry DYKE lived with his mother and siblings. John SPONG and Henry SPONG may well have been brothers.

Thank you. I'll check that out again, though it could take a bit of time.
Eliza SPONG/DYKE was declared to be 72 when she died in 1901 - giving a c.1829 birth date. The date of baptism I was given for her was 23 Aug 1829 at St Peter's, Woking.
I understand that a descendant has her death certificate naming Henry and Elizabeth as her parents, but will get back to you. Obviously, my informant may be wrong.

For Wendyry:
My apologies for the delay: I landed in hospital the day after my last communication and forgot where I had been communicating with you.
However,
I confirm that Henry DYKE married Eliza SPONG, daughter of Henry SPONG (as attached).
Witness William WINDIATE was married to her sister Jane SPONG (1845).
Kind regards
Robert

Am looking for information of the Spong family whose children were baptised at St peters, Woking 1825 - 1831.
Is anyone able to help please?
Sorry for the delay! Let me know how suitable the attached file is for you. It covers Henry SPONG/Elizabeth BENNETT for 3 generations. They are not all fully developed, yet, but may be useful.
Also, I have posted a couple of pages deeper in this chat a copy of the Henry DYKE / Eliza SPONG marriage registry entry for 10 Oct 1852.
Kind regards
Robert, Auckland, NZ.
