Title: Myra Buckley in Toronto?
Post by: Bargee girl on Tuesday 09 February 10 23:59 GMT (UK)
I'm a new member and this is my first question to the chat-o-sphere. Hope I'm lucky!
I am searching for information on my Great Aunt, Myra Buckley, born Birmingham England 1906.

She reputedly emigrated to Canada (Toronto) ........I imagine in the 1920's or 1930's. I am told she married a man called Bill (William?) GRIELLUS  and they had one son.
There is a possibility that Myra may have travelled to Canada using her mothers maiden name (HARRINGTON).

I want to verify all of the above (so searching for shipping, marriage, birth records). I'd also like to know if the family has suvived to the present day.

To date I have only looked at phone books for Toronto to find the surname GRIELLUS but with no luck.  I have no idea how to get birth/marriage records.

Is there anyone out there who can help or advise me?

Many thanks ......fingers crossed!

Dear Karenlee,
I am completely overcome! How did you do that so fast? Can't thank you enough. Hopefully someone else can help with the GRIELLUS connection if it exists.

Are you in Canada and did you consult the Immigration Lists on line? I'm in Australia .
Once again very many thanks

Hello:
I have looked in the Ontario cemetery Finding aid
http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/search.php
Have not found Myra Buckley or Griellus.
Is it possible she might be in another province? or remarried?

Hi Karenlee and vbain,

I was told Myra Buckley married Bill Griellus in a letter received from her cousin who lives in Ontario (sent to me in 1988). I suspect this cousin has died since then.

I think it is very likely that Myra may have moved around within Canada as she had other Aunts who emigrated from Birmingham England to Vancouver.

Hi

I am still not finding anything on the GRIELLUS name in any of my sources sorry, nor have I found a likely marriage for Myra.  Perhaps someone with more Canadian resources will be able to help better than I can.

Cheers

Ontario marriage records at Ancestry only go to 1926. Marriage registrations from 1927 are being microfilmed at Archives Ontario and will be available in 2010 but it will be a while before they are available online.

Because Canada does not have a central registry for BMD events (it's a provincial jurisdiction), knowing what province the marriage took place in is essential because access varies from province to province. British Columbia marriages are available up to 1933 at the BC Archives (http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-6CD36/gbsearch/Births,Marriages,Deaths) but I didn't see a marriage for a Myra Buckley there.

I tried googling the surname Griellus and came up with nothing. I have a feeling the person who gave you the name mispelled it.

Jacquie and Karenlee..........yes, I think the surname GRIELLUS is a dud. I'll stick to searching for Myra BUCKLEY and unknown male only.
You have both been very helpful. Thankyou

I looked through Automatedgenealogy.com
without luck.
Census in Canada is not released until about 90-100 years.
Marriages are about 80 years.
I did do a cemetery search in ontario - found lots of Buckleys but no griellus!

I went to
www.canada411.ca
and put in the name and no Griellus but it did give alternates that you might want to check.

Gerelus
Grealis
Grills
Grigelis
Gielis
Grislis
This could take a lot of work but late at night with nothing else to do you might come up with something.

checked automated genealogy for Grills and Grealis

1901 census has William Grealis b. 1893 and his father is also named William living in Toronto. couldn't find them on the 1911 but could be spelled differently.

1911 census also has several William Grills in various provinces including Ontario and BC. I would concentrate on these two names and see if something pops up. I couldn't find anything that would connect with your Myra. It wasn't uncommon to marry someone much older though. If your Myra had a son named Billy (William) he could still be alive.

Most of the Toronto Cemeteries are not listed on that site, so if they did remain in Toronto very unlikly you would find them on there.

Maybe the surname I was told (GRIELLUS) was a misspelt French or French-Canadian surname........any suggestions from French-speaking Canadians out there regarding what the surname could be?

i also ran Grealis, Grills, and several other synonyms. Also tried all variations in Automatedgenealogy.com. Also ran Buckley - no luck so far.
