Title: Hayes family - Ireland and Brighton
Post by: peewit on Tuesday 09 February 10 14:40 GMT (UK)
My connection is with Mary Hayes b 1861 in Brighton. Her father was John Hayes b Ireland sources range 1831-1835. Her mother Johanna born Ireland. Can't trace marriage details, possibly Ireland but all children from 1855 born in Brighton. Would love to trace missing details of Mary's parents and marriage.
In 1881 Census there is another Hayes family also living in Brighton. Cornelius Hayes b 1843 Cork. Again missing details on wife's name and origins in Ireland. Could even be a brother of John mentioned above or just a coincidence they both settled in Brighton? Free websites and Ancestry website seem to have many details missing from early researches. If no-one can help specifically, can anyone suggest a source to obtain Irish family information?

Hi there

Could try the Irish family History Foundation. It is a pay site but have had a lot more luck with this site than at Ancestry. Worth a look.

http://www.irish-roots.ie/

Or have you tried : familysearch web site?

Good luck

Janine

Full civil registration started in Ireland in 1864 so you will have to research church records to find details of your Hayes family. Do you know which religion they where ?

To search parish records you usually need to know a reasonably precise location to start your research - e.g. parish, town, or townland. Data for some counties is available on the pay-website that Janine mentioned, but not all. The (free) website http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/ might be worth keeping an eye on, as they plan to add some County Cork records, which might be worth following up if that clue proves correct.

It's worth tracing the family (and any extended family) through as many census returns as you can in case a more detailed location is mentioned.

Hayes was a very common surname in Ireland in the 1850s but concentrated in counties Cork, Limerick and Tipperary, with more than 1,200 household with that name...

Many thanks for the two replies. I will follow up the websites mentioned. I also have Hurley in Irish connections as well as Hayes in my wife's line and even when moving to England I have found omissions. As far as I can tell they were Roman Catholic. Maybe I'll have a closer look at earlier Censuses but at least one I checked just had born Ireland which isn't too helpful!

Hi there
Many thanks - checked out the Irishgenealogy free site and came up with highly likely marriage of John Hayes and Johanna Mulvihill in 1854. The date is about right for their first child in 1855.
