Title: Job Chaloner or Challoner
Post by: chaloner edie on Monday 08 February 10 15:31 GMT (UK)
Job Chaloner was born in 1831 Holt Denbighshire wales. In the 1881 census he lived with his son John in Chester. I'm trying to find out if Job's wife was Jane Evans or Jane Thomas. I'm hitting a brick wall. Any help would be wonderful. I thought it was Evans because she died in 1878, and Job was living with his son in 1881. I figured he was there because he was a widower. Thanks Edie

Have you tried ordering the marriage registration of Job Challoner? There is a marriage from the 4th quarter of 1854 in Great Boughton that has a Job Challoner and Jane Evans on the same page (vol 8a, p 479). The registration should have Job's father's name listed.

Job and Jane are in Cheshire on the 1861 census with son John (6) and daughter Emma Jane (2 months) in Chester St Oswald, Cheshire (Piece: 2631; Folio: 68; Page: 23). In the Free BMD there is a birth for Emma Jane Chaloner that was registered in the 1st quarter of 1861 in Great Boughton, Cheshire/Flintshire (vol 8a, p 346). There is only one other Emma Chaloner listed being born 1861 (+/- 1 year) and her birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1861 in Wrexham, Cheshire/Denbighshire/Flintshire (vol 11b, p 327). The birth registration will say who her parents are.

The family is in St John The Baptist, Cheshire on the 1871 census listed as lodgers in the household of Sarah Hughes. The family consists of Job Chaloner (49, carter, born Holt), Jane (39, born Holt), John (16, clerk solicitors general, born Holt), Emma J. (10, born Chester) and James C. (3, born Chester) (Piece: 3723; Folio: 33; Page: 8 ).

Hi Jaquie
I have all of that information but a cousin has a Jane Thomas as Job's wife. On Bmd I brought up Jane Thomas and the number is 8a479 the same as Jane Evans , Job Challoner and William owens. Can't figure who belongs to who. Jane thomas's number shows as 8a _79 but when you look closely you can see that there's a number in front and it looks like a 4. Thanks for your help Edie

Hi Edie,

Check www.cheshirebmd.org.uk - this is the local register office index.  It shows the marriage of Job CHALLONER & Jane THOMAS took place at Chester St Mary in 1854.

http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/ - has full transcriptions of the PR for Chester St Mary and shows:

Job CHALLONER, bachelor, Gardener aged 24 married Jane THOMAS, sp aged 23 on 21 Dec 1854.  Grooms father was Charles CHALLONER, a gardener, brides father was James THOMAS, a gardener and the witnesses were Ann GRIFFITHS and Charles THOMAS.

Hope this helps,

Jean
