I'm researching the family of John BOTTRELL who came to Australia with his family in the 1850's with his family, married Mary ann BLACKMAN in 1860 at Roxburgh in New South Wales, and died in 1890 (also in NSW).
I have some facts (shipping records & census') and quite a few conflicting bits of info from various family trees I can see on the web. I'm hoping someone can help validate/verify the conflicting info.
Here's the facts as I know them....
#1 - Shipping records for the "Lord Hungerford" in 20 Mar 1855:
Bottrell Christopher, 48 (b. abt 1807), Farm Labourer, Sunning Cornwall, Richard and Mary Both dead
Bottrell Margery, 37 (b. abt 1818), ---, St Juste Cornwall, Thomas and Jane Reynolds father dead mother living at Fill??k Cornwall
Bottrell John, 16 (b. abt 1839), Engine driver, St Juste Cornwall, Christopher & Margery onboard
Bottrell Mary J, 11 (b. abt 1844), ---, Madron Cornwall, Christopher & Margery onboard
Bottrell Elizabeth, 6 (b. abt 1849), ---, Madron Cornwall, Christopher & Margery onboard
#2 - 1851 UK Census, under the surname of Battrell/Bathrell (in Ancestry index), in Madron Cornwall:
Christopher Bottrell, Head, 46 (b. abt 1805), ? , born Cornwall Sennen
Margery Bottrell, Wife, 44 (b. abt 1807), ---, Cornwall Ludgenan (sp?)
Thomas Bottrell, Son, 16 (b. abt 1835), Engineer, Cornwall St Just
John Bottrell, Son, 13 (b. abt 1838), ? Son, Cornwall St Just
Mary J Bottrell, Daughter, 7 (b. abt 1844), Scholar, Cornwall St Just
Elizabeth A Bottrell, Daughter, 1 (b. abt 1850), ? , Cornwall Sladess (sp?)
#3 - 1841 UK Census, under Botinle (in Ancestry index), in St Just Cornwall:
Christ'r Bottrell, 35 (b. abt 1806), Engine man
Margery Bottrell, 30 (b. abt 1811)
Christopher Bottrell, 10 (b. abt 1831)
Thomas Bottrell, 7 (b. abt 1834)
John Bottrell, 4 (b. abt 1837)
Richard Bottrell, 1 (b. abt 1840)
So this gives me a reasonably consistent family group:
Christopher (snr), b. ~1805-1807, came to Aust. in 1855
Margery Reynolds, b. ~1807-1818, came to Aust. in 1855
Christopher (jnr), b. ~1831
Thomas, b. ~1834
John, b. ~1837-1839, came to Aust. in 1855
Mary J, b. ~1844, came to Aust. in 1855
Elizabeth A, b. ~1849-1850, came to Aust. in 1855
There are quite a few family trees that seem to include the same family group with roughly the same dates and the same areas in Cornwall. I'm hoping someone can help with the following:
- Christopher (snr, b. ~1805-1807) is listed as coming from Sennen/Sunning according to my reading of the docs. What is the correct name of the town/area?
- There is reference to St Just & St Juste. Which is correct?
- I have seen two conflicting entries for the death of Christopher, one saying he died in Pen, Maharashtra, India in 1852 (age 22). This sounds like a military posting of some sort. Can anyone confirm the details of this.
- There are a number of family trees that also show him being born in Pen, Maharashtra, India. This isn't consistent with the facts I have above. There are also references to some of his siblings being born there. I'm putting this down to lazy consolidation of other (unvalidates) info on the web.
- Some of the family trees have Thomas (b. ~1834) coming to Australia (records of death), but I can't find any shipping records. He didn't come on the same ship as his parents and John, Mary J & Elizabeth A.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi,
You will find the baptisms of the children of Christopher and Margery
Christopher, Thomas Reynolds, John, Richard, and Mary Jane registered in St Just (Correct Spelling) and Elizabeth Ann in Madron
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/
defferent spelling variants so use the similar sounding names box
Christopher and Margery's marriage also.
Christopher Seniors baptism on same site in Sennen (correct Spelling)
I suspect Jane REYNOLDS residence is a spelling inacuracy for Phillack
Cheers Kris :)

Christopher BOTTRELL was buried 1 Jan 1853 Sancreed aged 22 years of Receven (Christopher was married and in Sancreed in 1851)
Young Elizabeth Ann's POB is listed as Madron in 1851 BTW - its just the enumerators writing - have a look at his M for Mary.
Margery's POB is Ludgvan
Kris :)

I don't see Thomas. Have you tried to check the possible Australian death record to see if parents are named?
Cheers Kris :)
-
Margery REYNOLDS was baptised 21 Aug 1807 in Ludgvan. Parents Thomas and Jenefair
The marriage is also on the OPC site
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/moreinfo.php?ID=253656&dbtype=marriages&formval=
Jane and Jenefer are interchangeable names.
Jane and 2 of her children are in Phillack in 1841
Cheers Kris :)

Great. Thanks.
How did you find the baptism/birth of Margery REYNOLDS? I can't find the record even when I put a year of 1807 and a parish of Ludgvan.

The records are not all on the OPC site. I have access to other sources.
Cheers Kris :)

Does anyone have information regards the parents Richard Bottrell and Mary (Vingoe), I have found their marriage record here, http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=marriages&id=859191 but am not sure about anything else. Death or burial records would be appreciated, Richard was baptised in the church at St Just is all the information I have on him, and his death was approximately leading to the families emmigration to Australia.
This however creates another conflict in information, I'm Australian but in Cornwall at the moment, in the St Just library there is a book of the 1851 census having Mary and Richard as 46 and 48 respectively, however that means they weren't born at the time they were married... Any insight into which sourse is correct or the most correct?

I think the Richard you're looking at on the 1851 census is the brother, not the father, of Christopher and he married a Mary as well. It was a commonly used name.
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=baptisms&id=3236229
baptism for Richard, son of Richard & Mary
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=marriages&id=859342
marriage of Richard junior & Mary
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=burials&id=558182
burial in 1872 for Richard junior.
Richard senior's mother was also a Mary.

Thank you so much for this information. John Bottrell's son, John Harley Bottrell's son, Percival Clarence Bottrell's son, Keith Bottrell's son is Martyn Bottrell, who is my Father. I never Met Keith because he died before I was born so it's good to be able to come on the internet to find out more about my family :)

I haven't done any research on the Bottral/Bottrall/Botrills for quite a while, but when an email turned up in my in box yesterday, it awakened my interest. While I am not a direct descendant of Bottrell's, I have found two in my family tree, and will explain below:
My Great Great Grandmother was Susan Mathews. Susan married a Richard Bone in 1857, or there about (I need to check the exact date). Susan was born in St Just in Cornwall c 1840, as was her mother, Mary Matthews, nee Blackwell. However, on the 1861 census it shows Susan Bone, married, living with her mother and brothers, but no sign of Richard Bone.
This is the census for 1861, for Susan and her family:
Mary Matthews age 64 Mother
Joseph Matthews Head age 23 (Status given as "married" but she is still using her maiden name)
Jane Matthews Sister age 26
Henry Mathews Brother age 17
Susan Bone age 20
WILLIAM H BOTTREL age 4 Nephew
ELISABETH F BOTTREL age 2 Niece
John Williams age 29 Boarder
The question is, whose children are the Botrells? As they are the niece and nephew to the head, who happens to be Joseph Matthews, could they be Jane Matthew's children, or another sibling of Joseph and HIS siblings?
Ten years later, William and Elizabeth Bottrel show up again on the 1871 Census. This time they are staying or living with their "grandmother" Elizabeth Thomas.
As for Susan Matthews, my 2 x G Grandmother, she remarried John Davies in Neath in 1965. Technically she was a bigamist, as her first husband, Richard Bone was still alive at that time. Richard Bone also remarried in 1866 to a Tinklin/g. Richard then emigrated to Australia with his family, sometime after 1871.
What what I would like to know is, do you have any knowledge regarding the above Bottrels in my family tree? I would be extremely grateful if you could put some flesh on these Bottrel bones.
Regards

Hi,
I’m a descendant of Thomas Reynolds Bottrell, (brother to John) he sailed with his wife Margret (maiden name. Simmons) and one year old daughter Sharah on the Bermondsey arriving in Australia a month after his parents on the 29th April 1855.
Their father was born in Sennen and the other place you are looking for is St Just both in the tip of Cornwall near Penzance. According to my records Christopher Bottrell (who married Margery Reynolds) died 16th Feb 1874 in Point New Zealand and Margery (Reynolds) Bottrell died 16th July 1872 in Golden, both are outskirts of Auckland. NZ
Hope this helps.
