I have already received much help on this Australian forum on the Zenner Family of Victoria. Does anyone have information when he first arrived in Australia. It is pre 1900. Thank you.

Hi Ken,
He was in Australia before 1888
20 Jan 10 Feb 1888 Government Gazette - 2 items listed under grazing land available
Buln Buln Yarragong 993 acres 72 allotments Melbourne office - Forfeited holdings of Gustavus D ZENNER at lessee request
Victoria PO Directory 1888
Gustavus ZENNER - Moe
As to arrival I am not seeing much
There is a Seaman aboard the WILD WAVE
Gus ZENNER AB aged 27 from NC of Tyne Ship travelling from Picton to Sydney to Sydney 14 Feb 1885
Doesnt really sound like him does it.
Cheers Kris :)

aha
Police Gazette 22 Sep 1886
Stolen from Gustavus D. ZENNER, Moe, Gippsland, between Naples and Melbourne, a gent's massive gold ring, set with thirteen diamonds in a cluster, six large ones in the centre and seven smaller ones on the outside of them, as if to hold the larger ones in their places. Value £100. The ring was enclosed in a box which was brought from England by the S.S. CHIMBORAZO. The box was over carried to Sydney, and the ring may have been stolen there.
O.5996. 21st September 1886.
also copied to NSW police gazette
Although I see the ship arriving in Melbourne a few times in 1886 including Sep I don't see Gustavus aboard but he is already listed as of Moe so perhaps he did not actually bring the ring with him on the ship or its badly transcribed.

Thanks Kris. My information shows Gustavus David born 1857 and marrying 1886-Catherine Cameron[Australian]. The seaman could be correct, that is if Gus is from Newcastle,uk. I,m not sure of picton and what NC stands for. The ring affair--don't know what to make of that.

I think Picton could be the port Picton in the south island of New Zealand, and possibly indicates the last port the ship was in before Sydney.

No direct help but the Australian National Library has digitised a lot of old newspapers
eccellent research facility
suggest you register if you use as there is the facility to put your details against any corrections
There are sometimes the need to edit as it is optical character recognition and it may get it partially wrong
Thus if anyone sees your related correction then it may give them a link to you
try www.nla.gov.au
