Title: Weaverthorpe Parish Registers -- GRICE & GIB(B)
Post by: encinita on Friday 05 February 10 21:32 GMT (UK)
John GRICE married Sarah GIB(B) 18 Oct 1808 in Weaverthorpe.  Are there births (& parents!) for them perhaps in the 1769-1790 registers?

Family members were definitely Methodist by 1840 if not earlier.

Thank you for your efforts!

Encinita,

I have a transcript of Weaverthorpe Parish Registers for the time period you stated and found the following entries which may be your Grice family.

23rd January 1776
John Grice of West Lutton and Ann Simpson also of West Lutton were married by banns  in the chapel of West Lutton.

Baptisms

19th August 1776
Robert Grice son of John Grice and his wife Ann of West Lutton

14th November 1777
Ann Grice daughter of John Grice, Labourer and his wife Ann of West Lutton

7th August 1780
John Grice son of John Grice, Labourer and his wife Ann of West Lutton

26th October 1782
Benjamin Grice son of John Grice, Grocer and his wife Ann of West Lutton

4th July 1784
Elizabeth Grice daughter of John Grice, Grocer and his wife Ann of West Lutton

21st September 1788
William Grice son of John Grice, Grocer and his wife Ann of West Lutton

I will take a look for the name Gibb, although I couldn't see any entries whilst I was looking through for the name Grice.

Best Wishes

Hi there
I have looked for John Grice and think I found him in the 1841 census but is wife is Martha. They are living at West Lutton which comes under Weaverthorpe. Unfortunatley he is a widower in 1851 so cannot find out from this where Martha was born

Scarbro

Thank you both, CJL & Scarbro, for such replies and for your efforts!

The GRICE/Simpson marriage and children match some entries I have seen in online, undocumented family trees.  Now, I have a real source!  Unfortunately, those same undocumented family trees give the John (who marries Ann Simpson) a second marriage to my Sarah GIB and then a whole additional set of children, so he would be having children over a 48-year span.  I guess it's possible, but there is a GENUKI transcript of Baines's Directory of 1823 clearly showing two John Grice's in West Lutton.  Now, with CJL's help showing that Grice/Simpson had a son John born in 1788, doesn't it seem more likely that the son is the husband of Sarah Gib?  At any rate, I have enough info now to use to go through these parish records more thoroughly myself and see what turns up!

CJL, are these registers any more specific than just Weaverthorpe?  Is a specific church mentioned?

As for the census listing, I have not been at all successful in being sure I've found the right people.  I had discounted the one Scarbro lists, but now looking at it again, I guess it could be he and that the Mary Gobron listed in the household could be my John's daughter Mary (baptised Weaverthorpe 1818).  This John's age sort of works with CJL's baptism data.

My ancestor is John's daughter Rachel who is married and in Emsall, West Yorkshire for 1841 & elsewhere in West Yorkshire for subsequent censuses.  Also, I think I have son Christopher also in West Yorkshire for 1841.  So, I've been looking there, too.

One more question:  sometimes I see Weaverthorpe listed with East Yorkshire rather than Worcestershire.  Is one right and one wrong?

Anyway, this is all enough to keep me busy for a long while.  Thank you again, very, very much for your help!

Encinita,

I am glad that I have been able to be of some help.  The marriage entry for John Grice and Ann Simpson is the only entry which states the marriage took place in the chapel at West Lutton, all the other entries just state that they are entered in the parish register for Weaverthorpe and Lutton.

There are a couple of further entries for the surname Grice if you would like them I would be more than happy to post the details.

Best Wishes

Encinita,

Regarding your question as to the location of Weaverthorpe.  I do not know whether there is a Weaverthorpe situated in Worcestershire but the baptism and marriage records which I found for the Grice family are entered in the Weaverthorpe parish registers in East Yorkshire.

Jenny,

Unfortunately I am unable to supply you with details of the parish register entries which you are looking for because the transcript for Weaverthorpe parish registers which I have only covers the period 1769 - 1790.

I am sorry that I have not been able to help you.

Best Wishes
