Hi,
On the census it states my grandfather was a road manager. Would anybody know what this means.
Thanks
Maggie-May :)

One problem with the census is that many occupations are self-defined.
Road manager could refer to anything from road mender to foreman on a road gang. One clue might be in the column whether he could read or write or both. Writing is the primary attribute.

In addition to the uses nickr90 mentioned, I've also seen the term used to describe someone in charge of a car/coach transport business.

Hi, ,
Thanks Nick and Shane for the info.
I made an error, it wasn't on the 1901 census but on his daughter's marriage certificate
that his occupation was given.
However on his own marriage certificate ,his occupation was sailor and he couldn't write.
Thanks for your help.

I am hoping someone has a copy of the 1901 Wexford census. I have looked through it in the library on a visit but need to check it again. Since I last looked, I have found that my grandad left school in 1897 and address was King Street. Could anyone tell me if there was a Walsh family. His Father was John, mother Mary. He had brothers Thomas, James and possibly William. Grandad was John Joseph but I think he might have been away at sea. Anne

1901 Irish census is supposed to be put online mid-2010 along with 1911 census already on National Archives website so you'll soon be able to re-check it yourself.

Thanks. I have tried the Leitrim-Roscommon site but was not successful. I was over in Wexford a month ago but didn't manage to check it out. Anne

Hello again. I have seen 1901 irish census on line but each time I try to access it I end up somewhere I don't want to be. Could anyone tell me if there is an easy way to access it and check out the family. Anne

Sorry Shane. Brain puddled. I kept clicking on 1901 irish census but when it opened it was uk. I will try the one you sent. I had that sight in my bookmarks, but thought it was only for the 1911. Thanks for the speedy reply. It is my Walsh family i am after. will try to see if I can track them down on that site. Watch this space, Anne

Word of warning – in my first hour searching I found numerous transcription errors, which is understandable when deciphering handwriting.
For example I found that three siblings of the KIRWAN family living in separate houses have their surname transcribed as KERWIN, KIRIVAN and KINVAN respectively!!! I only found them by looking at the list of surnames for the particular townland. Also found a CURRAN transcribed as CURAN amongst others.

I have come across some omissions in my own search. I was looking for a branch of my own family in a townsland Kilkeny, which is in the 1911 census, and it is not in the 1901 census. It and they were there long before 1901. lol.
But in fairness, I think that there are some additions to be included later on.
Hope so, as it is a thumbs up for the information that is there.

Hi. I have now found my Walsh family in the 1901Wexford census. They were living in 1 Castlehill Street. They had previously lived in King Street. Shown are John, wife Mary. Sons, John Joseph, William, James and Francis. Can find no trace of them in 1911 although at that time my grandparents had moved to Liverpool. Anne

@shorts this is the problem I am having with my kervin family

If you know first name and approx age then just use that...
Search
then select 100 per page, sort by Surname
-
Because you get 5 years each way...
If someone was 4 then put in Age 1 and one only gets them up to age 6 instead of 9!!
