Have you found the original marriage entry? Sometimes they give father's name.

From IGI the children are:

Robert 1830
Elspeth 1832
James 1834
John 1836
Andrew 1842

All listed as "Kettle"

Does the 1841 census state whether he was born Perthshire or outside the county?

I do not have the marriage certificate and the info I have from the 41 census of Errol does not indicate birth place. From another source I hvae him buried in Errol in 1852 having died at age 56 and a farm servant at Mains of Murie. Also in the same plot are his wife and son Andrew.
I have 5 possibilities of who his parents were and the most likely are 1,2 & 5
1.    James had a William 1800
2.     James and MacFarlane had a William 1801
3.    David had a William 1799 & 1802 ... but I know it is not the 1802 one and the 1799 probably died at young age
4.    Laurence and Laing had a William 1810
5.    Alex and Buchanan had a William 1798

What age was he on the 1841 census? You should remember that for those over the age of 15 years their age was rounded to the nearest 5.

From the burial details he would have been born around 1796.

If he didn't die until 1852 then he should be on the 1851 census. That should give a place of birth, and you might be in luck - he might have other family members staying with him. Let's just hope it gives the parish of birth, then you should be able to narrow it down further.

The 41 census has him at 35 .... but then as with the death records it is only as good as the person's memory who is giving the info. I will order in and look up the 41 & 51 census from the FHC and see if place of birth is mentioned.

Thanks for your comments

Likely he wasn't home for the night of the 1851 census:

Mary Kettles 35 b. Motherby, Perthshire
William Kettles 11 b. Errol
Andrew Kettles 9 b. Errol

Address: Leetown, Errol

Can't check on Mary's marital status (married/ widowed) on the transcript I am looking at.

One possibility if he was working away from home in 1851:

William Kettles, 45, servant, ploughman b. Fowls Wester, Perthshire
Address: Little Murie Bothie, Errol

Again, you might want to check his marital status as with Mary's entry  :)

The ages for the children are correct, the ages for Mary and William are 10 years out ... maybe not surprizing. If the birth place was Fowlis Wester then the parents most likely would be Alex and Elspeth/Elizabeth Buchanan as my other choices are not living in the FW area. Of course a marriage certificate might resolve that.

Thanks for the input and your time... apprecitated
