John Meiklejohn b. 10 Apr 1801 in Barony, Lanark married Janet McDougal 6 Jun 1828 in Glasgow. They had 2 daughters, Janet b 1832 and Isabella b 1838 both in Glasgow per the Census. In 1841 the family is residing at Hilland in Glasgow and in 1851 at 72 Waterloo Street, Glasgow.
In 1861 Isabella is working in a shoe shop in Dumbarton and in 1862 marries Thomas Hoey and they move to West Derby, Liverpool. I have found her on all succeeding English Census.
I have several entries from SP to track down and find Janet as a married woman as I saw no matching deaths during the interim.
In 1861 mother Janet is at 72 William Street, Anderston, Glasgow. Although she is shown as Head, her occupation is "Joiners Wife". I have been unable to find any record of her husband John in 1861 nor have I found a death on SP which fits after several tries and credits spent.
Janet dies in April 1878 at the Barnhill (think that is correct) Poorhouse outside of Glasgow. I have not found an entry yet for her in the 1871 Census.
Any help in finding Janet in 1871 would be appreciated and maybe other suggestions of search parameters so I can find John also.
Thanks,
Jojo

I found
1871 Scotland Census
Janet Meiklejohn
b about 1811
born in Thurso, Caithness
address Bank Street
occupation as Annuitant
I have a Christina Meiklejohn b July 1860 in my family tree as mother to Mary Jane Cox. Her husband was Job Cox. I wonder if your John & Janet Meiklejohn are any relation to Christina. Any idea?

I like the Annuitant part but all the Census entries for Janet (McDougal) Meiklejohn indicate she was born c 1801 in Kilbride, Argyle. Her Death Cert from 1878 shows she was 77 which goes along with the 1801 birthdate so this would likely not be her.
I have found many Meiklejohns especially in the Glasgow area but have not been able to establish any connections to any other families. The sum of my knowledge is:
Isobel Scott married William Meiklejohn 22 Jul 1798 in Barony. They had 3 children Isobel b. 4 Jan 1800, John b. 1801 as above and David b.14 Jan 1803. If I have the correct Death Cert for Isobel Scott then she died during Childbirth on 9 Jun 1807 aged 31. No other info is on this entry.
John married Janet McDougal as in my first post. I have not found marriage or death info for Isobel or David or for father William.
So at the moment, I am at a standstill. So far the name Christine has not featured in this family, so unless I can find parents/siblings for William or a marriage for David , this would be the only way to link to more family.
Thanks for your help, I just need to keep on looking.
I have seen on other posts that the Mitchell has some records for Poor Applications so I am going to ask if they have info on Janet entering Barnhill which might be helpful.

I just reread your reply post and noticed you said that Isabella moved to Liverpool. Christina Meiklejohn married Job Cox who is from Kingswinford, England.

Thanks jlaing.
I did see the Meiklejohns from Bothwell in 1861 when I had also found Janet Meiklejohn living at 72 William St. Anderston so I know there is no connection here.
The Marriage info for Janet & John states : John M. Plumber in Glasgow & Janet McDougal residing there, married 6 Jun 1828 by Mr. Adam Gun, Gaelic Minister in Barony." So no additional info on this document or clue to Janet's parentage.
The 13 Mar 1801 christening of Janet with parents Hugh MacDougal and Janet McKellar is a good possibility. The IGI record is submitted but I also found this on SP so a valid option for Janet. I note that this is in the parish of Kilmorich while the census info shows as Kilbride each time.
I found the marriage info for John's parents on SP which states : Wm Meiklejohn Farmer and Isobel Scott both residing in this parish 1 day." So they must have been from elsewhere but no clue as to the place. I have had some great information from other parish registers but sadly the Glasgow ones have offered no gems as yet.
I sent a request to the Mitchell Library yesterday, maybe they will provide some better answers from the poor records on Janet.
