I am seeking any information on the Woohouse family that in the 1840's lived in Mappleton or Matlock. Wirksworth Hundred.
I regret I do not know the area so any information however insignificant would be useful. i.e burial records as well
appreciate any help

Have you got them on the censuses?

Apologies
It would appear my gg grandfather George Woodhouse was born in Mappleton according to the 1851 census and was aged 42 then. Born abt 1809 / census of 1841 give dob as abt 1811. Wife was Charlotte. In the 1851 census he was living at 7 Ogilby Street, Woolwich
Children were
Elizabeth aged 11
John aged 7
Mary aged 9
Rebecca aged 3
According to the 1841 census his job at aged 30 in mappleton was a tailor
If the IGI is correct then George was christened 5-3-1809 in Mappleton and Father John, Mother Sarah but I have no way of confirming this.
I was wondering if there is a churchyard in Mappleton where family members were buried as I guess it is a small village?

Hi,
In the 1841 Census ONLY, adult ages were rounded down by up to 4 years. This means that your
George Woodhouse was born between 1807 - 1811.
John Woodhouse = Sarah, had other children bpt at Mappleton Derbyshire:-
Edith 1807
George 1809
Mary 1811
Ellen 1822
By 1841 it looks as if both John & Sarah had died, because you can see Ellen living in the next house
to George & Charlotte in Mappleton. Note she is listed as aged 15 (rounded down) so aged between
15 - 19.
George had been living in Woolwich, Kent prior to 1841 because his child Elizabeth appears to be the
one born there 22.10.1839 Bpt. 10.11.1839 this info from IGI.
Did George marry Charlotte Wade, 12.6.1837 St. Luke, Old Charlton, Kent? Looking at the original
parish register for this marriage may give the name of his Father.
When Elizabeth Born 1807 married she gives Father as John, She married William Arnold 1844 Ashbourne, Derbys.
Please come back if you need further help

I would like to visit Mappleton at some stage perhaps this summer.
Not knowing the area I wondered if it has changed much over the years i.e would I be able to find a chrchyard where they may have been buried or the street where they lived. Looking on maps it appears that Mappleton is a small village.
thanks

OOargh. thanks for the info. Any idea whether this was considered a serious offence or what would be the likely outcome. I guess he just didn't want to work for his master anymore

My ancestors hail from Mappleton too! Its a very small place and still is today - though you may have already visited. I presumed my family left to find work - don't think their exit was anything as exciting as yours!! (williamson alias carter). I can let you have some photos (e-mail) if you didnt get there and would like to see them. The church there is very cute.

sadly I have not managed to get there so any photos I would be garteful for. would you know where burial records marriage christening birth etc would be held
