Is anyone able to tell me the nature of establishment listed in the 1911 census as St Patrick's House on South Circular Road. I know it was run by the Little Sisters of the Poor, but would be grateful to learn why its residents were known as 'inmates'.

it's next to #45, St. Marks Terrace, on the Kilmainham section of Sth Circular Rd, and listed in Thom's 1914 as follows :
J.M.J. Little Sisters of the Poor
Home for the Aged,
St. Patrick's House
Sister Mary Stanislaus - superioress
'inmate' is the term often used by census forms for occupants of homes, institutions etc..

Thanks very much. I'm glad it was not something more sinister as I believe my greatgrandfather was in there.
Thanks again.

I've had a quick look at the website and there could be sinister connotations after all. Thanks for the information and link all the same.

It would appear that St Patrick's House and St Patrick's Hospital are two entirely different establishments. Or am I mistaken?

Since St. Patrick's on Sth. Circular Rd was a 'Home for the Aged' I assume there was a infirmary ward as part of it. There is a separate St. Patrick's a psychiatric hospital in Kilmainham..

The Little Sisters of the Poor, who ran St Patrick's House, have given me all the information I was looking for, and a bit more besides, from their records.
This post may now be considered completed and I would like to thank everyone for their assistance.

Hi - I'm researching my grandfather who was buried from St Patricks House in 1943. Could I ask did you contact the Little Sisters of Mercy at Sybil Hill? What kind of information were they able to supply.
-
Hello -
I have sent you a personal message with contact details.

Thanks for the link. I'll see what records they may still have.
I've found St. Patrick's House reborn as Hybreasal House - expensive flats in Dublin 8 - a bit ironic really.
Cheers

Hello -
I have been trying to find the details you require, but, so far, without success. However, I have sent a personal message to someone I sent them to I the hope that they may still have them. I'll let you know if I locate them.

Hello -
I eventually managed to work out how to access messages I had sent previously. You should contact Sister Mary Christina at the following e-mail address : dublincons@aol.com

Would you have an address, there has been no reply to email sent. Thanks.

Hello -
I only dealt with Sister Mary Christina by e-mail, but she did mention that they were temporarily away from Raheny House, which is where the archives were kept. Having looked up Raheny House, it appears to be on Howth Road, Clontarf East, Dublin 5. Hopefully this will be of some use to you.
