Hi All
I wonder if anybody can help me?? My Mum was adopted at the age of 5yrs old. She has a birth cert in the name of Howe (adoptive fathers name) but a baptism card in the name of Wooward (Mother's maiden name) Which one is her real/legal maiden name???
So up until the age of 5yrs she was a Woodward & then changed to Howe when she was adopted. I was interested to know if i am using her proper name when researching my family history.
Any help would be great.
Many thanks

Hi - Isn't it really want you want to research?
If you are wanting to trace your family roots back then you would follow you mother's maiden name rather then her adoptive families name - but if you are interested in knowing more about her adoptive family her rasied her then you would research them - but you would still need to research her mothers name as well - is that all very confusing?
If you mean how to put her name down in the family tree then wouldn't you use her first name she had - rather then the adoptive name?
Just a thought
Ciao

Which one is her real/legal maiden name???
As she was legally adopted, her 'official' maiden name is Howe.

Hi
My Mum never knew her real Dad, she knew his name & where they lived but unfortunately he wanted nothing to do with her.
So therefore what i am trying to find out is as she was given my Nan's maiden name (Woodward) & then 5yrs later she was adopted & her name changed to Howe, was she Woodward legally for 5yrs until & then legally Howe.
I am researching her real father & know plenty on her adoptive father.
Sorry if i have been a bit confusing
Many thanks

Hi Lawgirl,
It may seem confusing, but you do have a starting point. You mentioned that your Mums original name is Woodward, then adopted to Howe. Tracing the blood line then starts with Woodward. You also mentioned that you know her father's name and location.
You need to start with the known in order to search for the unknown. Not knowing your location ( which Country you live ) . I would suggest searching the newspapers in the area of interest ( location of your blood line grandfather ) . Check the older papers for the obituaries, etc. Any type of news. Many times, the obits list the names of relatives.
If you are located in the USA. You can search some older Census records on line thru a local library that may subscribe to a paid research site. The Latter-Day-Saints, Family History Centers are another option for your research. Good Luck with your research
