I am trying to find out what medals were issued to Philip Richard Brooks during the Crimean War. He served in the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards.

Have you any more details on the soldier in question - specifically do you know if he died in the Crimean War? I ask as if he died in the Crimea it will narrow down the medals he, or his next-of-kin would have received.

Doesn't especially narrow things down. Whether he died or not he'd be entitled to the Crimea medal and the Turkish Crimea medal. The only variable we don't have is what clasps he was entitled to, but 3/1st Guards were at Alma, Inkermann and Sevastopol.
A medal roll look-up is what's needed, but unfortunately I no longer have a copy.

I did a look up and was about to post it when I noticed that timothy hadn't been on since February. He was 4572 Drum Major (later Sergeant). He had your three plus Balaklava.

Thanks. Philip Richard Brooks did outlive the Crimean War. Since I posted my query, I have found the following (the entry is incomplete because that is all that I have been able to find):
DWM Major Philip Richard Brooks went out to the Crimea with 3rd Bn. Grenadier Gds. In 1854. The medal roll for 3rd Bn. Grenadier Guards for Crimea shows that he was entitled to the Crimea War Medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava and Inkerman. On 23/5/1855 he was appointed Sgt. With the 3rd Bn. Gren. Gds. From Drum Major (presumably to fill a vacancy in the fighting ranks) and on 13/12/1855 he was struck off the Bn.’s strength as appointment as Cornet in the hand Transport Corps. The medal roll for the L.T.C. shows that he is entitled to the Sebastopol clas, as a Lieut. Harts Army List confirms that he is entitled

Can I recommend 'A Bearskin's Crimea' by Algernon Percy, which is an account of his ancestors, Henry Percy VCs, experiences with the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the Crimea, based on family letters.
