Title: Looking for info - death of Hugh BROOKS
Post by: janda2050 on Sunday 31 January 10 22:18 GMT (UK)
Hugh Brooks was killed in exercises off the Australian coast when in the Marines (or maybe Navy, I'm not sure).  He was married to my aunt and had gone to Australia with her and his son in the mid 1950s.  His second son was born in Australia.  He served in the forces over there and I believe helped in the rescue of a 'man overboard' in Sydney Harbour.

After he lost his life,  his wife and kids came back to Scotland.

Any help with details of his death would be much appreciated as I haven't a clue where to start !!

Thanks for all your help.

Cheers

Hi

Thanks for your help but my Hugh Brooks didn't have any middle names.

Is there anywhere I can search newspaper records?  Apparently the rescue in Sydney harbour and the disappearance were both reported in the press.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to help me with this one.

Cheers

If he was a member of the forces and died in service I wonder if his name should have been  here ......notes the supreme sacrifice of those personnel who have in the exercise of peacetime duty sacrificed their lives in the service of their country; and....

What year did your aunt return to Scotland?

Newspapers are not digitised for the period you are seeking.  A little hard for anyone to assist you if you don't know the date of the event.  Perhaps someone else can offer some suggestions.

May I ask how he 'lost his life'?  Are we talking the Vietnam War, as it's the only one I can think of after the 50's, not that I'm up on wars?

Hi Anna,

Would this be him?  A bit of a different story.  http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/41834/supplements/6267  (first entry on the page)

A reference to the award here http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ResearcherScreen.asp  (search term  - sapper High Brooks)

Some info http://www.defence.gov.au/Army/RAE/RAE_History.asp

These guys might be able to help with a death or at least be able to give you some idea of where he might have been after 1959. http://www.aamme.com.au/

You can purchase a subscription to view the Sydney Morning Herald Archives 1955 - 1995 here http://archives.smh.com.au/   I find that their text recognition is not great, so if you have a look, try lots of word combinations, not just his name.

Hi to Cando, Jamjar, Warncoot, Aniph and Debra

Thanks to all of you for the research you've done on this.

I've been trying to get in touch with my aunt - given name Mary but known as Moira - 's second husband to find out when she came back to Scotland and will pass on the information as soon as I get it.

He lost his life on 'exercises' - apparently the servicemen were left in deserted areas (in his case an island off-shore) with supplies, a dinghy, compass and the wherewithall to get back to a designated point in a given time.

Some time later, his dinghy was found with puncture marks and it was assumed that he had supplied some hungry shark with that month's food supply.

I'm sorry details are so sketchy - his kids now live abroad but I'm also trying to get some more info from them.

Once again, thanks for all your efforts - they are much appreciated.   I will put any more information I get on the post.

My aunt eventually sailed back to Glasgow with her two sons to rejoin the family here.

Hi ,
Using the link given below,
Search as a guestand type in to keywords search...

h. brooks deceased

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

You will see a government record titled

Corporal H. Brooks (presumed deceased)Compensation claim by wife v. Commonwealth. Dated 1964.

1964 co-incidentally is the year of the death on the NSW indexes I found in reply #1.

The record is not digitised for reading and it is marked as 'not yet examined'

I believe you can apply for details.  Follow the promts from clicking the blue file number.

I wonder if answers might be in there.

Hi Sue

Thanks again for your endeavours on my behalf - I love how everybody tries to help each other out.

I've had a look at the link and will complete the application form asking for release of the document.  I've double checked the names on Hugh's birth record and he definitely didn't have any other names - he was a close friend of my dad's and Dad is sure that he's a one name guy.  Dad does say though at 82, he's not sure that he's sure of anything these days !!

I've emailed Hugh's kids - in different areas of the world nowadays - and await a response.

Thanks again for your help

Cheers

Hi Mary

If we're talking about the same Hugh Brooks, he was married to my father's sister.  I have been researching the family tree for some years and would be delighted to help you with this.

I also have more information on the details of Hugh's death

Regards

Anna

Thanks Anna for coming back to me my daughter is helping me do this as you can imagine this technology is way above my head. Reading his wife's name and the detail on his kids this is the same man. I have never done this sort of thing before and by chance last night my daughter and me where playing about on the internet and came across this.  I currently live just outside Glasgow with 4 children. All my sisters and brothers are now passed away I would love to hear any stories you have to tell

Hi Mary

I also live just outside Glasgow - don't know how to arrange to contact you as you aren't encouraged to give out personal details on the forum - perhaps the moderator could help as I assume that's how your daughter got the subject re-opened.  Would love to be in touch.  Have just worked out how to do it and sent you a personal message through Rootschat - please look for it

Cheers

Hi Janda.

If you click on the little icon that looks like a bit of paper under Mary's name, it will say 'personal message'. You can click on this and it will allow you to send a personal message to Mary's email via Rootschat. It won't reveal her email address, but you can ask her for it, or other contact details, within your message.

That way, any personal information is only shared between the 2 of you, it doesn't show up on Rootschat.

Lovely to see that you have found each other!

Sue

Hi Sue

Sussed it out just after my first message to Mary - thank you for your help though.

Mary is the sister of Hugh Brooks and we are arranging to swap photos etc and put members of the larger family in touch

Thanks once again for all your help

Cheers

Welcome to Rootschat Mary (and her daughter)

Sometimes Rootschat won't let you use the Private Message facility until you've made at least 3 posts so it would be best if Mary makes another couple of posts - short ones will be fine.

How wonderful that you have been able to contact each other, especially as it seems you live quite close to each other.

Judith
