Title: SNAGS LANE, CHICHESTER

Hi,

I am helping a friend in Canada whose Ancestors resided at Snags Lane in Chichester, Sussex.

This Lane does  not exist now and we would like to know what name the Lane is known by now.

Hi Alun.
I did a quick Google search & found the following two links.  Snag(s) Lane seems to be near todays Victoria Road.  You could contact the West Sussex Records Office which is actually in Chichester to see if they can help you further.

Added later:  I checked the 1851 census enumerators route.  This is the route he took, you might be able to follow it on a modern map.
'All that part of the parish of St. Pancras comprising, East Street - South side from ...? Johnson's premises to East Walls - East Walls to boundry stone by malt house - East Gate - St. Pancras Street south side from the church to the churchyard - Hornet - to the boundry stone by Hayllas's premises - SNAGGS LANE - west side - Hingsham Farm & cottage opposite - West side of canal.'

Thank you very much, i didn't think about using the Enumerators Routes on the Census.

I've just done  a search on the West Sussex data base.  This is the result,

Date 1862 
Description No surveyor. Approx. 1 in to 62ft. 19 × 493.
The houses are numbered, presumably according to a schedule, which has not survived. Includes the whole of St. Pancras street as far as St. James' Hospital (called the "Leprosy House"), East Street as far west as the Corn Exchange; part of the Hornet, Snags Lane [now Market Road], East Walls, Sweepers Lane [now Alexandra Road], part of Spitalfield Lane and Kingsham Farm. Names the church, the Wesleyan chapel, the Infants' School, breweries and various yards and stores belonging to individuals. Also shows the pump in the middle of Eastgate Square 
Market Road is a major ring road which I must have driven along many a time  :)

Me again,
I've just looked on a 'Old Maps' & found Snags Lane.  I hope this link works,

Snag Lane runs north/south on the map, it's near the cattle market & connects East Gate with what looks like the railway line on this 1880 map.  It also runs parallel with the parish boundry line,

Hi Jane,

I do thank you very much.

I have been helping a 73 year old lady who lives in Canada to find her
Ancestors William & Caroline White nee Cobden. They were living in Snags
Lane and I wondered where it was, so I can let her now.
Sad to notice a Leprosy House nearby. It must have been awful to have
lived in those times.
