Hi there Listers
Wondering if there is SKS in the Bedigo area who might be able to check / photo details for a Thomas GLEDHILL and possibly Eunice GLEDHILL who were buried in Section MON C4, Grave 1198 of the Bendigo Cemetary, on 07 May 1876 please? Interment No: is 6145 for Thomas.
I have been compeltely unable to locate my UK Thomas Gledhill after 1851 census and wondering if he's made his way over to Aussie for the Gold strike and ended up being buried there.
Really appreciate any one that may be able to get along to this cemetary and perhaps provide a photograph or any other details, of this Thomas Gledhill so that I can either eliminate him from my search or whoop with delight that I've found him ;D
Thanks..... Lynda NZ

awesome..... thanks so much for confirmation.
Am I better off attempting to purchase the records themselves to check for additioanl details, keeping in mind that I'm not certain this is my rellie yet?
I can see from the website provided, that info is free of charge if you are a personal visitor using the readers but of course, I can't get there to do that :'(
Is there someone local who may be kind enough to check on my behalf and advise any further details listed please?
Cheers....

Hi,
I agree, it is not very clear on how one makes a remote enquiry.
I would use the emailaddress supplied on the 'contact us' and ask for advise on acquiring further particulars.
However, as we do not have the information you hold regarding the 1851 census etc, are you able to say whether the information given here so far is ringing any bells?

Hi Lynda
Where is your chap in 1851 and does the birthdate as given in the death that Cando found for you match the census entry?
There is a digitised grant of probate for Thomas GLEDHILL died 4 May 1876, farmer of Eppalock, near Sandhurst. Probate granted to James Pendleton, store-keeper of Sandhurst and Sarah Gledhill, widow. Unfortunately the will itself is not digitised.
There is a will for Sarah Gledhill of King St, Bendigo, formerly of Eppalock, widow, died 13 April 1906. It states she had one-fifth share of her husband's estate. All of her estate left to her son Edward Arthur Gledhill.

So this would be the family Cando has listed for you. However, whether he is your Thomas is not clear yet.

Food for thought indeedso it's back to the boards to see if I can find better proof that the Aussue Thomas Gledhill is the same Gledhill from Yorkshire and that both of those, are my Gledhill.
Very grateful for all the assistance and informaiton -- I have to say I am blown away by the depth of details uncovered on my behalf. This is my first foray into any Aussie connection and I was stumped at where to start looking up what so that you all so much for your help...
It's fabulous that you have free newspaper archives out there! wow......
I'll call this closed for the moment to take it off the board but will update as soon as I have some sort of cnfirmation one way of the other..

Lynda I hope you don't mind me posting after you 'closed' the thread. I wonder if you are aware of the information on certificates in Victoria?
Info -
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,373754.0.html
The marriage cert in 1855 of Thomas and Sarah would give you identifying information - hopefully including naming Thomas if it is your man, as a widower and number of previous issue, living and deceased.
It is possible to purchase [AUD$17.50] and immediately download an image of the certificate. You will need the registration number - reply#1

I am able to open the probate file - VPRS 28 P2. This Thomas Gledhill is husband of Sarah. Pendleton does not seem to be a family member, no children named.

Well done, Donna, and Cando,
The death notice Donna found for him confirms that he is from Dewsbury and the work done by Cando shows a child from a previous marriage, born and died in Dewsbury to parents Thomas and Elizabeth, as well as all the information about the deaths and the children born here.
IGI have three children baptised in Dewsbury to Thomas and Elizabeth GLEDHILL with two of them dying as babies. I see Thomas and Elizabeth in the 1841 census with Emeline but cannot see them in 1851 although Emeline would seem to be with her uncle and aunt as a visitor. Happy to post this info if you want it.
Cheers, Judith
PS
Wivenhoe, there is mention in Sarah's will that she recieved a one-fifth share of her husband's estate. The only child mentioned by her in her will is the son Edward Arthur.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread posted on my behalf by my wife Lynda. The information above is both confusing and fascinating, but on balance it now seems most likely that the Thomas Gledhill who sailed to Oz is not my ancestor although the door doesn't feel completely closed.
...I have at least two Thomas Gledhill's from Dewsbury (my great great grandfather and his father) in my family tree. The younger Thomas Gledhill certainly did not leave Yorkshire and my grandmother and four siblings are present with him (aged 65) in his house on the occasion of the 1911 UK census.
The issue for me is over the disappearance of Thomas Gledhill (senior) who is present with his wife Elizabeth and children living on Dewsbury Moor in the 1841 and 1851 UK census pages, but missing thereafter. Perhaps you can all see how I was attracted to the notion that he might have gone alone to Australia and not the least because he was a coal miner and miners would have been flooding into Bendigo in the 1850's. Found a new wife in Sarah Walker as well.
That said in the last few days I have now found records for five Thomas Gledhill's who died in Dewsbury between the 1851 and 1861 census. ...Seems Thomas Gledhill's were two for a penny in Dewsbury in those days. I have to think that reduces the odds of my Thomas Gledhill having gone to Oz to one in six and that perhaps more likely is that he died down a Dewsbury coal pit. Also the Bendigo Thomas Gledhill was a farmer and indeed someone above has also indicated that he was in the wool trade before he left Dewsbury. In light of this I prefer not to pay for his marriage certificate to Sarah Walker for the time being as someone has suggested. However, I remain intrigued to learn more of the Australian Thomas Gledhill and very much welcome any further insight. ...Would certainly have been interesting to know what it said in his will and unfortunate that unlike his wife Sarah's will it has not been digitised.
Thanks, Pete

Hi Cando,
I have decided I will pay for a copy of this marriage certificate for Thomas Gledhill to Sarah Walker and for which you kindly provided the Reg #2959, ...however, the Victorian heritage search page fails to find it for me even when I include that number. Wondering if you can provide further advice please?
Cheers,

Thanks for your help CANDO - I've got it now. ...The marriage certificate for Thomas Gledhill and Sarah Walker has provided sufficient x-checks for me to completely discount this Thomas as my relative.

Oh what a disappointment. So difficult to trace a relative from an area where there are so many of the same name. Good luck with your research :)

Oops!, I'm new to this website. My wife is related to Thomas and Sarah Walker (above) so information contained within the marriage certificate would be most useful. Would you be able to advise the names of the parents of both. I currently have Thomas' parents as Thomas Gledhill and Mary Berry/Greenald. I believe Sarah's parents may have been Charles Walker and Jane Stead. Thanks.
