Good morning everyone, I wonder if anyone could help me please!!
Where would I find out, which record/register office to apply to for a lady born in Marlborough in 1813 ? I know there are offices in Swindon and Devizes, but there doesn't appear to be one in Marlborough itself. Has anyone applied for a cert. from a Marlborough person from this time period?
The lady in question, incidentally, is my GGG Grandmother Hannah Gordon. Trying to locate her cert. so to establish her parents names and also where they lived.
Many thanks in advance for any help

Hello ... and welcome .
As early as 1813 you will not find a birth cert as these came into use in 1837 under new registration.
You would need to look at parish records to see if Hannah was baptised or if she married after 1837 her marriage cert would state fathers name but not mothers details.

Hi and welcome
Unfortunately nothing's coming up on www.familysearch.org or www.freereg.org for Hannah's baptism, though neither is by any means complete.
Did Hannah marry on or after 1 July 1837? If so her marriage certificate ought to give you the name and occupation of her father, which would be a useful starting point. Sorry - I see Tazzie already said this!

Thank you for your replies. I didn't know about birth certs only coming in after 1837, can you tell I am new to this? ;D
I am not sure of her date of marriage, but know their eldest (recorded) child was born in 1844, so entirely possible that the marriage was post 1837.
I will do a search when I get to the library next and see if I can find her that way :) Many thanks for saving me for searching for the unfindable!!
I am so glad I found you all 8)

Hi Tazzie
She married John Charles Templer, born 31 July 1814. They had five children
Dora Elizabeth Gordon Templer born 14 Oct 1844 in Greenwich, Kent
James Lethbridge Brooke Templer born 27 May 1846 in Greenwich, Kent
John Harvey Templer born 11 November 1847 in Greenwich, Kent
Frederic Gordon Templer 12 June 1849 in Greenwich, Kent
George Anson Templer 22 December 1851 in Greenwich, Kent
Hannah died in Harrow Middlesex, 13 May 1889, buried at Harrow on the Hill
This is all the information I have directly relating to Hannah so far.
Thank you :D

That looks good, especially as she is Hannah Frances in Dora's baptism record and Hannah F in the 1851 census.

Someone on Ancestry has Hannah Frances GORDON in their family tree - born 25 July 1813 Marlborough, daughter of Admiral Sir James Alexander GORDON and Lydia WARD.

Thats brilliant thank you so much :D Will send off for their marriage certificate. it certailnly won't be the first mistake by a long way rofl My Grandfather is recorded as Penn on his marriage certificate, he was actually Fenn, and another of the Templers is recorded as Sempler on a marriage cert!!

I suggest you only cite Hannah's details on the marriage certificate application as the Temple/Templer error seems to have crept in in the compilation of the typed index and could complicate the application. You only need to give one of the names to get the certificate.

I wonder if the Gordons were in Scotland or abroad in 1841.
In 1851 Hannah's Father is in charge of Greenwich Hospital
HO107; Piece: 1587; Folio: 415; Page: 2: Greenwich
James A Gordon 68 Head of Household born Scotland: Rear Admiral on half ~~~~: Lieut Govnr of Greenwich Hospital
Lydia C Gordon 33 dau Scotland
Saloudoza M Gordon 27 dau Portsmouth
Elizabeth A Gordon 25 dau ditto
Adelaide L Gordon 23 dau Plymouth
Sophia M Gordon 20 dau ditto
Philip Instice 58 Visitor Capn RN (half pay)
John MacDonell 53 ditto ditto
strange then that Hannah was born 'inland' !
