In the 1901 Scotland census David Heggie is listed as as inmate and scholar in Kilmalcolm. His father died in 1899 but his mother was still in Glasgow with his younger sister. Has anyone any idea what this institution might be?

There is a place called "Quarrier's Homes" (now called Quarrier's village) which has an address of Bridge of Weir but I think is quite often put under Kilmacolm as it is in between the 2 villages but perhaps closer to Kilmacolm.
A few of my friends were "Quarrier's Girls". Most of the Houses are now private dwellings and the Church "Mount Zion" is abt to be taken over by Property Developers against great opposition.
I'm sure if you put Quarrier's in Google, info will come up.

Hi Ros,
Just noticed you are looking for info on Balrossie/Quarriers Homes. Someone else was looking for similar information inthe 'Scotland' section as opposed to this 'Renfrewshire' section so I posted some detilled info about both institutions in the Scotland section.
As for a website on Balrossie, no, I couldn't find one but if you check the other article, I think you will find the reason why! It was boys only, so that would explain why the boy was there and the sister was not.
Quarriers took both boys and girls, and I am told, they have two full time archivists. I am sure you would be able to contact them through their website or just write to Quarriers, Quarrier's Village, Bridge of Weir.
I believe there is an old book on the history of Kilmacolm, and there may be more information in that, but so far have not had a chance to look at it. If I find out anything more, will let you know.

Hi Paisleyborn,
Thanks.
I did contact Quarrier Homes some time back and they were very helpful and gave me a lot of information. The boys were released into the care of their sister and again the trail runs cold.
