Trying to trace back my LAING ancestry as far as I can. Right now I'm stuck on my great great great grandfather Dougall (Dougald) Laing born Jan 1828 in Old Monkland, Scotland and died 13 APR 1902 in McDonald, PA. He was married to Janet Thomas in 1847. He immigrated to the US about 1883. His children were Alexander, Adam, John Cross, Agnes, and Mary. I am trying to find who his parents were. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi jlaing2607
Welcome to Rootschat ;D
Looking at the Census, and the IGI on Family Search - there are 3 more children:
CENSUS: First born (probably) - , Archibald b abt 1849 Slamanan Stirlingshire
IGI & CENSUS: 3rd son (probably) - Dugald b 5 Jun 1853, Slamanan Stirlingshire
IGI: Mary born 1857, Slamanan - she must have died, probably before 1861 (maybe at or near birth), and definitely before 1865 when they named another daughter the same name (common practice)

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
NOTE: The IGI gives the maiden name of Janet as THOMSON in the birth records of the 5 of their children found there. These records are extracted (transcribed from the original records).
For 1851: http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
1851: Omoa, Shotts, Bothwell, Lanarkshire
Head: Dugald LONG 24, Ironstone Miner, b O Monkland, Lanark
Wife: Janet LONG 23, b O Monkland, Lanark
Son: Archibald LONG 2, b Shotts
Son: Alexander LONG 8 months, b Shotts
Lodger: Christopher HUTTEN 32, Furnace Filler M?. b Ireland
1861: New Monkland, Lanarkshire
Dougald LANG 32, Collier, b Old Monkland
Wife: Janet LANG 32, b Carnbroe, Lanark
Son: Archibald LANG 12, Collier, b Slamanan, Stirlings
Son: Alexander LANG 10, Collier, b Clelland, Lanark
Son: Dougald LANG 7, b Slamanan, Stirlings
Son: Adam LANG 5, b Slamanan, Stirlings
Son: John C LANG 2, b N Monkland, Lanark
1871: New Monkland, Lanarkshire
Dougald 43, Coal Miner, wife: Janet THOMSON 42,
Alexander 20 , Shotts abt 1851
Adam 15, Slamannan, Stirling
John C 14, New Monkland
Agnes 9, New Monkland
Mary 5, New Monkland
Naming pattern, might suggest :
Dougald's father was named Archibald (first son)
Janet's father was named Alexander (2nd son)
Can't pick such a certain pattern from the girls - as there are gaps in the children's ages but an educated guess might be :
Janet's mother - Mary (if dau Mary b 1857 was the first born daughter)
Dougald's mother - Agnes (If dau Agnes b 1861 was the 2nd born daughter)
Son Adam was born in 1855 - an auspicious year, as you get extra information on certificates produced that year - it should tell you, the exact date and place of his parents marriage, if you don't already have it.

FreeCEN database (see above link) also holds the 1841 Census for this household in 1841:
Cambroe Coalworks, Bothwell, Lanarkshire
Dougald BAIRD 69, Coal Miner - Y
Agnes BAIRD 39 - Y
John BAIRD 3 - Y
James BROWNLIE 21, Coal Miner, - Y
Dougald LAING 15, Coal Miner - N
I'm strongly suspecting this is your Dugald, in the household of his maternal grandfather Dugald BAIRD, and that Agnes BAIRD age 39 is his mother, perhaps using her maiden name after being widowed (common practice in Scotland)
IGI: Submitted:
Agnes BAIRD born 28 Nov 1802, chr 12 Dec 1802, Old Monkland
Parents: Dugald BAIRD & Jean STEWART

And I think this is the IGI (extracted) record for their son Archibald's - possibly a transcript error on the father's name somewhere along the line:
Archibald LANG - chr 30 Jul 1848 - Slamanan
Parents : Donald LANG & Janet THOMSON

I think you are definately onto something.
I had ran across this as well
Dugald Laing
Birth: 11 OCT 1810 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland
Parents:
Father: JOHN LANG Family
Mother: AGNES STARK
Which I think this Dugald could be the father to my GGG grandfather Dougall. Could be a long shot since this Dugald would have only been 18 when my GGG grandfather Dougall was born.
I've seen the name Archibald before. I think he must have died young or stayed in Scotland because I don't remember seeing his name much in the US Census when they came over. The christenining record I found on IGI makes sense now for Dugald the son. I don't know if he died young or what because he doesn't show much in records with this fam.
DUGALD LANG
Christening: 05 JUN 1853 Slamannan, Stirling, Scotland
Parents:
Father: DUGALD LANG Family
Mother: JANET THOMSON
Thanks for the leads so far.

If your naming clues is accurate I came up with a possible father for Dougall of
Archibald Laing
b about 1800
household
Elizabeth Laing 56
Janet Laing 32
Eliza McKinzie 9
Which the wife being Elizabeth contradicts the Agnes theory but Dougall's wife was named Janet. Eliza is the granddaughter. So maybe Janet is the actual daughter to Archibald and not daughter in law which would make this the wrong lead to Dougall's father.
I am in favor of your theory that Dougall's parents are probably Archibald and Agnes.

I'm really leaning towards
Archibald Laing
Birth: 28 Apr 1796
Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland
Christening: 15 May 1796
Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland
Death: 23 Aug 1867
Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
only thing conflicting is the marriages
Marriage(s)
Spouse: Margaret CRAIG (AFN: ZT86-K9)
Marriage: 8 Aug 1824
St Martin-In-The, Fields, Middlesex, England
Spouse: Agnes SINTON (AFN: ZT8D-52)
Marriage: 23 Nov 1835
Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

Another lead that looks promising to be Dougall's father is
Daniel Lang born about 1791
1841 Census lists Dougald Lang as son with siblings Malcolm, Mary, Janet, and Archibald.
Address was Market St 24 in Renfrewshire county which isn't far from Old Monkland where I have Dougall confirmed as residence later in his life.

I think I'm on the right track now
Dugald/Dougall Laing
father: Archibald Laing b 1801
mother: Agnes Baird b 1802
From there I'm not sure but I have
Dugald > Archibald > James b 1777 > Archibald b 1755 > Robert b 1735 > Alexander b 1714
Any confirmation or help would be great.

Where did you find the following information? Did you verify it?
Dugald > Archibald > James b 1777 > Archibald b 1755 > Robert b 1735 > Alexander b 1714
-
Haven't been able to get in black & white that Archibald was the father by documents but pretty sure it's accurate considering the naming conventions as listed previously. I think Archibald b 1801 probably died in a coal mining accident.

Digging in with ChatGPT it's leading me down another path of
father: Alexander Laing
mother: Margaret Dougald
but states wife is Margaret Dougald which I came up with wife of Jessie (Janet) Thomson
