I've found Norman Yates born on the Wirral in 1917. If it's my father (middle name Parkes) his dob was 8th Oct 1917. His mother is listed as Topping.
How can I find her first name(s) and her date of death, please?

Isn't this more likely to be your father's birth reg??

There is this marriage
Sarah A Topping
William Yates
Sept quarter 1915
Prescot Lancs

But as Suz said, the use of the name Parkes must have come from somewhere in the family :D

..and the birth reg you found (mother's maiden name Topping - has no middle name ??
There is a marriage FreeBMD
Dec qtr 1914
William Yates
Amy B Parkes

Your father's birth cert would have parents names
his marriage cert would give father's name

hi,
and the death ties in with a birth of an Amy Beatrice Parkes in 1894 in Lancashire.

ps the middle name Beatrice is on the death record in Cheshire BMD

suz,
Yes, I'm sure you're right on track! Parkes was my dad's mother's maiden name. Doh!! I should have twigged about the Topping misfit, although I didn't make the connection at the time.
The reason I didn't put parkes in the search was because I've been told that [sometimes] being too specific isn't a good thing as names are sometimes omitted on records (although, thinking about it, I guess that's more true for censuses than birth records).
Also Amy's death makes some sort of sense as my paternal grandmother was my dad's step mum.
Is there any way I can find the cause of Amy's death? There was talk in the family about a fire but noone is really sure.
Thanks for all your help - it's been fantastic!! This stuff is HARD!! Well, for me, anyway.

Hi
If you send for Amy's death certificate, using the info Suz gave you, this will give the cause of death.
If it was a fire there was probably an inquest and you may be able to find out more from local papers, but people on here will be able to help you with that.

Thanks, Jan.
I've sent off for the certificate.
I'm also looking for a William A Yates in Liverpool and can find 3 of them (1925-27). Is it possible to look at these birth certificates on microfiche if I visit the registry office (yes, I know, I'm spending too much time watching Heir Hunters! ;) )

Just an update for all those who helped me out:
I've now got Amy B's death certificate. There was a family rumour that she died in a fire but it seems she died of flu [probably the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918]
On my wife's side we found that her grandad died just 2 weeks before the end of WWI - also of the flu!?! Fancy going through the war and getting so close to the end then dying of an illness! :'(
Thanks again to all who've given the time to help. Best wishes to you all.
