Hi, I am interested in any children of William Gillbanks of Red Sykes who married Mary Sowerby at Greystoke or Barton on 16/2/1747.
I would also be pleased if anybody could tell me the name of William's parents.
Would also like information on Gillbanks family of Penruddock.
-
The only thing I can assist you with is that the information you have is taken from the marriage licence/bond.
"1747 Feb 16
Gilbanks, William, Red Sykes in Matterdale p Graystock [Greystoke], single man
Sowerby, Mary, Murray [probably Murrah] p Graystock, spinster.
[Ceremony to take place at] Greystock or Barton"
The actual marriage ceremony is listed in the register of Barton, Westmorland.
A 1917 transcript by Rev. Henry Brierley published by the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeology Society states -
"Will: Gilbanks Mary Sowerby ... ... 20 Feb 1747"
I can also tell you that many of the people who lived on the northern edge of Matterdale, like Red Sykes, attended Threlkeld church and not Matterdale.

I have a George Gillbanks born 1741 Threkeld father William. George married in Matterdale 1766 to Sarah Dawson. Wonder if this family is connected to yours?
-
Hi MatterdaleMan, thank you for the information regarding Threlkeld church, my story is a bit convoluted but I think there may be a link with the Red Sykes family, I believe it may be through Isaac Gillbanks born 1691 the son of Thomas Gillbanks of Red Sykes, who married Grace Vertue of Penruddock, at Greystoke 1685. Isaac along with his siblings Frances and John were born at Penruddock, Thomas died there1702. I have been unable to trace the children after their births but believe Isaac may have moved to the Furness area where he, and his descendants, used both Gillbanks and Banks surnames. As William lived at Red Sykes I presume he may be a close relative of Thomas'. As to proving a relationship, that would entail a possible yDNA test, if a proven descendant of William could be found to volunteer for such a test. I have already proved my relationship with another Gillbanks family in this way.
PS Is/was Red Sykes a farm or Hamlet, I can't find it on Google Earth?
Regards, Jim.

Hi Duckweed, It looks like George could be one of the people I am looking for, as the above post from MatterdaleMan says people from that area would attend Threlkeld Church, another area to research, thanks for responding, Regards, Jim.

Try this web address
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/idld.srf?X=336495&Y=526550&A=Y&Z=120&lm=1
you should see Red Sykes in the bottom 1/4 and Murrah at the top middle
-
Hi again MatterdaleMan, thanks for the link, have found them. It looks like Red Syke Farm was the family home, and when Thomas left to marry Grace Vertue, another brother? or close relative moved in, or took over the tenancy, possibly William's father. Further enquiries needed. Regards, Jim.

Hi Jimgillbanks, Duckweed
I can't answer the question, but we have Dawsons in Matterdale andI copied down loads of spare Dawson stuff from Cumbria Record stuff so I'll have a look. It might not be early enough though.
Duckweed, do you have any more info on Sarah Dawson, please?
Best wishes

PS
I don't know any more about Red Sykes, but Red Sykes Farm is just off the A66 and even closer to the old road, just befor Threlkeld even though it's technically outside the Threlkeld boundary.
They would have had to cross a large wild terraain to get to Matterdale church, in an area which is also high up and has more than it's share of highly inclement weather.
Hope you find more.
Best wishes

Hi Emms, thanks for the information, I take it that I should also take into account the Gillbanks' who were Baptised etc at Threlkeld. Although it helps sometime that our ancestors gave similar names to their children, it also means a whole lot more problems sorting out who belongs to whom, when there are a few brothers, cousins involved. Regards, Jim.

There is a website for Threlkeld

and my own Matterdale site is at

A couple of burials [from my own transcription taken a few years ago at Carlisle Castle]
William GILLBANK of Bankhouse [Matterdale End] aged 70yrs 4 March 1774
Mary widow of William GILLBANK of Bankhouse [Matterdale End] aged 73yrs 14 March 1774
These might be yours.

Hi Matterdaleman.
I wondered if that was your web site. thank you very much for all your work. We've used the old one loads and I'm keeping an eye on the new one.
It's a shame so many sites closed.
I'm still settling on a home to relaunch mine.
Thank you again.
Best wishes

Hi MatterdaleMan, thanks for the links, I have already joined your site (JimboGilly) enquiring after William, and am hoping Greame will respond, he may have some clues there.
I think the couple are the Williiam and Mary, so that means William, being born just 13 years after Thomas's son Isaac, and born at Red Syke must be the son of Thomas' younger? brother. Does that make sense?
I now do not think George was the son of William of Red Syke as he was born 1741, and William married 1747 and is described as a single man, although does that actually mean bachelor, could William have been married before?
after all he was 43 years old. Regards, Jim.
-
It is my experience that "single man" means unmarried and never having been married i.e. bachelor. Otherwise he would be shown in records as "widower"
-
Hello again MatterdaleMan, yes it would state widower, can't think why I missed that. Thanks, Jim.

Hi all, really really cheesed off, have got the details of the Threlkeld Church Records Roll number off the familysearch site, only to find that the Mormon History Centre in Liverpool has now closed down, so there are now none in Merseyside, nearest one is Manchester, and am unable to get there. Gggrrrr.

Hi Jim hope you are well, Digging up an old thread here but I wanted to add the info I have;
William who died 1774 married Mary Cockbain.
Williams parents (based on my research) are George Gilbank and Agnes Watson
William and Mary Cockbain had two children,
Thomas Gilbank 1740
George Gilbank 1741
William I think was previously married to Elizabeth Ritson and they had two children
Robert Gilbank 1731
Mary Gilbank 1734
George 1741 Married Sarah Dawson, I only know of one child John Gilbanks b1771
John Married Elizabeth Relph/Relf and they had a fair few children
Mary Gilbanks 1798
John Gilbanks 1800
Joesph Gilbanks 1803
Hannah Gilbanks 1804
Sarah Gilbanks 1807
Benjamin Gilbanks 1809
William Relph Gilbanks 1813
Elizabeth Gilbanks 1815
James Gilbanks 1816
You wont find some of these baptisms, from memory 1815 and 1816 only exist within parish records and were never transcribed online. As you know Jim I descend from James 1816.
Heres one descendant thats sure to jog your memory;
Joesph 1803 had a Daughter Hannah b1847 who married Richard Mason I'm sure you know the rest for this line.
I hope this is useful or for anyone else looking at this line, Gillbanks within the Threlkeld area can be troublesome. To add to the mix John and Elizabeth Relph/Relf has some children Baptised in Whitehaven. From memory it was William 1813, Elizabeth 1815 and James 1816. The others I think where Threlkeld.
-
Hi Ross, thanks for the update. I have had a bit of trouble with this laptop and seem to have lost a bit of information from it. I think some of the Gillbanks crew moved to Ambleside and a couple of the men later lived in Ingleton Yorkshire, but as far as I could determine none of them had any children, I could be wrong though.
-
Such and old post, but for many years I seem to get "pulled" back to this thread (Matterdale, Threlkeld, Gillbanks (and its variations), Relph etc.) , so to help complete the circle I have registered and here are some further details, linked to my part of the Gillbanks family.
I am the grt, grt grandson of one of the men who moved to Ingleton, Joseph (1801 - 1886), who founded the Masons Arms pub in Ingleton in the 1840s.
Joseph did have a family, his son Joseph George ("George") emigrated to New Zealand in 1879, and ended up marrying and settling in Karamea on the west coast of the South Island.
I currently live in Christchurch, New Zealand, but was born in Karamea.
