Date on photos is September 1914.As Holland was neutral during first ww, they either volunteered or changed nationality.

Hi Elsbeth
Welcome to Rootschat ;D
Could you perhaps just clarify a little more, what you already know of these brothers, and what it is you're specifically looking for?
For example - I see an Nat Archives entry for Medal Cards:
Ferdinand De Witt Royal Field Artillery Second Lieutenant Staff Corps Captain
Carel Archibald De Witt Honourable Artillery Company 121 Private Depot Battalion Tank Corps Lieutenant
And an 1891 Census for a Carl B de WITT 34 and wife Helena, with son Ferdinand age 2 - West Ham Essex. Do you already have this or any other Census, BDM's or Military records?
Cheers

Hello, the photos I have of the brothers de Witt state that they are cousins of my father in law, kap.ltz Ferdinand Diephuis. (1926)I tried to get the genealogie together and got stuck with those brothers de Witt. And as I am 91 years old, there is not much time left. If you have any more info I would love to hear from you. Hi Elsbeth
Wow! I'm seriously impressed ;D
We will do our best to find what we can! I'm sure others will jump in to help.
http://www.stamboom-lans.nl/Stamboom%20Ad/Parenteel%20Karst.htm
Is this a part of the genealogy of Ferdinand Diephuis, or someone else altogether??
Jeanette Henriette(nettie) LANS b 1881 Sidoardjo. dau of Carel Nicholaas Ferdinandus LANS and Wilhelmina Charlotta van den BROEK.
Married twice:
1)in 1902 to Bernandus KLASENS, b 1873 Delfzijl,
2) in 1914 in Soerabaja to Ferdinand (Fen) DIEPHUIS born 1881 Groningen

Carel Blad DE WITT and Helena Jane GARDINER
Sep Qtr 1887 - Toxteth Park - Ref: Vol 8b, page 493
This marriage certificate, would hopefully tell you Carel's father's name (and that of Helena).
However, I beleive this may prove to be Helena's birth on the IGI:

Hello Anne,I read your local history pages after I emailed you and indeed my inlaws are Fen Diephuis and Jeanette Lans. They had one son, Johan (John) born in Soerabaja where his father was in charge of the Royal Navy Dockyards. When my husband was 4 month (1915 )they went back to Holland and lived in Vlissingen. Fen was there commander minesweepers My husband studied law in Leiden (Holland) and went to Indonesia in 1939 as secretary Commander Naval D.Ys
During the war in a officers camp in Tjimahi (Bandoeng Java) and after the war appointed prosecutor (auditeur militair) military court martial for Japanese warcrimes. In 1950 we went to Australia and changed the name to Deephouse for business reasons.I let you know all this in case you can help someone else.
There is no mention of Ferdinand de Witt-Petronella Weema living in England, but I am sure that was so. In other genealogies she is called Pietronella Wiema (exact dutch spelling and her info closed, (private) I have a photo of the painting of the whole familie de Witt, which according to some other families hangs somewhere in England.Keep in touch end kind regards, Elsbeth

Hello Elsbeth
What a wonderfully interesting life yourself & your late husband have led !
I've been doing some digging - I hope this will not swamp you! I'm trying to put it in a reasonable order ;D
From what I can gather...there is a generation missing in your outline.....
The 2 photos you have of the WW1 soldiers brothers Carel Archie and Ferdinand DE WITT, were certainley born and died in England, and undeniably are sons of Carel Blad DE WITT (b Netherlands 1855) and Helene Jane GARDINER (b Scotland 1864) who were married in 1886 in Lancashire, and who also died in England.
You have said, Carel Archie b 1892 and Ferdinand b 1888 are cousins of Ferdinand (Fen) DIEPHUIS born 1881 Groningen - do you believe this relationship to be 1st cousins:
There is a Carel Blad De WITT on the IGI born 1855 Groningen whose parents are listed as Ferdinand DE WEEMA and Elisabeth WEEMA.
This is the ful list of children on the IGI, born in Groningen to Ferdinand de WITT and Elisabeth WEEMA
Willem Hendrik DE WITT b 8 Apr 1839 Burgerlijke Stand, Groningen, Groningen, chr 10 Nov 1839
Anna Clara DE WITT 21 NOV 1840 Burgerlijke Stand, Groningen, Groningen
Elisabeth DE WITT 03 NOV 1846 Groningen (submitted record)
Carel Blad DE WITT - born 10 Oct 1855 Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands
Lambertus de WITT b 28 Sep 1858 Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands
( Note: These births are all extracted, except for the daughter Elisabeth. "Extracted" record - meaning it's a transcript from actual parish or church or civil records as opposed to submitted record by family members or LDS sealing records which can be unreliable).
Also on the IGI (Extracted):
Ferdinand de WITT age 38, (born 28 Sep 1799 Groningen son of Willem de WITT and Anna EIFELD)
married 28 march 1838 Burgerlijke Stand, Groningen, to
Elisabeth de WEEMA age 18 (b3 Jan 1820 Groningen dau of Hindrik WEEMA and Elizabeth Ennes WIERSEMA)
It's also possible Ferdinand was married before to Zusanna van BELKUM in 1828, Burgerlijke Stand, Groningen - which is from another extracted IGI record. This couple had a son Willem de WITT in 1829 Groningen.
So I get a generation summary as follows:
1. Ferdinand de WITT (1888 Eng-1949 Eng) Carel Archibald (1891 Eng-1929 Eng), WW1 veterans & sons of:
2. Carel Blad de WITT (1855 Neth'd-1928 Eng) and wife Helene Jane GARDINER (1864 Sct-1933 Eng) [married 1887, England]; Carel son of:
3. Ferdinand de WITT (1799 - 1885) and Elisabeth WEEMA (WIEMA) (1820 - ~?) [married 1838]; Ferdinand son of
4. Willem de WITT and Anna EIFELD
HERE is a link to the Groningen Archives website
http://www.groningerarchieven.nl/content.php?hoofd_id=3&sub_id=45&subsub_id=49&hofman_id=35
It has a photo of Ferdinand de WITT, encaptioned to say:
born28-09-1799 to died 28-10-1885, lid van de gemeenteraad
http://www.archieven.nl/pls/m/zk2.obj_start?p_id=39926235&p_vast=5
This certainley seems to be a photo of the man who married Elisabeth WEEMA - his birth date matches that stated on the IGI extracted record for his marriage to her. I doubt very much whether Ferdinand was ever in England, at least he did not die there?
Further, I also found on the Archives, the possible marriage of his daughter Anna Clara:
http://www.archieven.nl/pls/m/zk2.inv?p_q=43084221
(on that page, click "details")
It says, I think that an Anna Clara de WITT married in 1869 to Franciscus LIEFTINCK (who had been widowed by his first wife Anna POSTUMA).
So if that's the right Anna Clara de WITT, that's taking me further away from finding who of the De WITT line married Dr DEPHUIS - Maybe there were other de WITT daughters, who I can't see on the IGI?
I wonder:
Is this Dr DIEPHUIS, Fens father?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerhard_Diephuis
Gerhard Diephuis (1817-1892) was a Dutch jurist.
After studies in Groningen, he was a judge with the Arrondissementsrechtsbank in Winschoten and later at the Gerechtshof in Groningen. In 1859, he took up a teaching post at the university of Groningen.
Diephuis was a leading proponent of legism and of the primacy of legislation. Influenced by French teachings, he wrote numerous textbooks on Dutch civil law. He was also instrumental in further diminishing the influence of Roman and customary law in favour of codified legislation
Photo of him here:
http://www.archieven.nl/pls/m/zk2.obj_start?p_id=39926098&p_vast=5
OR: There is also this Groningen - Dr. Johann Heinrich DIEPHUIS?
http://www.archieven.nl/pls/m/zk2.obj_start?p_id=39926101&p_vast=5

Further, I've found a genealogy for Ferdinand de WITT and Elisabeth WEEMA's daughter, Elisabeth :
There are lots of photo's here (Elisabeth was very pretty) - and I think also there are connections in this family to Sumatra etc (I don't speak dutch, but a little german - enough to get the gist of the dutch!)
http://www.kranenburgia.nl/I-J.asp
It says: Elisabeth de WITT, daughter born 1846 to Ferdinand de WITT and Elisabeth de WEEMA
married in 1869 Groningen to Ipojé KRANENBURG (b1831 Groningen-d1916). It was his 2nd marriage; his first wife Johanna and their two daughters died in 1864 during an Epidemic and only their son survived. Ipoje and Elisabeth went on to have children:
Ferdinand 1870
Albertus 1871 (d 1872)
Albertine 1872
Elisabeth (Betsie) 1875
Anna Clara 1876
Roelof 1880
Ipo 1881 (d 1881)
Aukie Marta 1882
Iopje died in 1916 and Elisabeth 3 years later in 1919.
Overall, this all seems a very likley genealogy line for Ferdinand and Archie, the WW1 lads!
But what is giving me pause is that you have : Ferdinand de Witt married a Petronella Weema (Wiema) in Groningen. And that one of their daughters married Dr. Diephuis, father of the Fen Diephuis.
Cheers

Hello - My husband is distantly related to the de Witts via Carel Blad de Witt who married Helena Jane Gardner[/b] and had two children named Ferdinand and Carel Archibald de Witt. I wonder if you are still interested as I would be very pleased to be in contact with you. Hoping to hear from you. Wendy Sutherland.
Our link is with Helena Jane Gardner (nicknamed Lena), daughter of Archibald Gardner.
