Title: 1871/81 Censuses: Thornton le Dale: Street Names
Post by: Tony Freeman on Sunday 24 January 10 14:06 GMT (UK)
Unable to locate Church Street on current day map.
Have only been able to locate Church Lane.
Does anyone know if the name changed to Church Lane after 1871?

I have also had problems in locating Lime Kiln Lane from the 1881 Census.

All help in locating places appreciated  :)

I have found  Church Street recorded in Bulmer's Directory of 1890, shown under Thornton Dale Township (Postal address Thornton-le-Dale)

www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/Thorntondale/Thorntondale90Dry.html

1881 free census search on findmypast.co.uk shows 2 entries for Lime Kiln Lane

1 Lime Kiln Lane Thornton Dale - Webster family
2 Lime Kiln Lane - Adcock family

Lots of entries on the 1881 and 1901 census for Church Street Thornton Dale

Thanks for the info.

It's the Adcpock family I am researching ..... found them here in census returns for 1871, 1881 & 1991. I always prepare a map showing the location of places where relatives have lived , along with photographs where possible. However, struggling with this one and I think the street names must have been changed over the years.

I have located Church Hill and Church Lane on Google map but unable to locate:
a) Church Street
b) Lime Kiln Lane
c) Lime Kiln Hill

"Outgang Lane" on the far east side of Thornton le Dale leads up to some old lime kilns, so I guess b) & c) must have been around this area.

Will have to try and locate some old maps  :)

Hello there,

Have you tried http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ ? Just search for "thornton-le-dale" and you can look at old maps of the village...my internet connection is being a bit sluggish so the maps aren't working very well for me at the moment to move around but there are 7 different years maps (from 1854 to 1927) and you can make out the street names...hopefully this may help you locate where your streets were  :)

Good luck, Em
