I am searching for information on the St. Peter's school in Dublin. My 3rd great grandfather Thomas Betts was Head Master there some time between 1831 and 1865. Are there any school records for that time period?
-
Do you know anymore about the school that Thomas was head-master of ? i.e. where it was located etc
could it have been at an orphanage ? there is one named 'St. Peter's Roman Catholic Orphanage' at 51 Aungier St

In his obit writen by his son George Charles Betts it stated he was Head Master of schools in the counties of Donegal and Dublin particularly of St. Peter's school in the city of Dublin. That is all I know.

I haven't found any references to Thomas yet, I'm assuming that the RC orphanage is probably not an option as you mention in your Kilkenny post (see: Need help finding Betts (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=432408.new;topicseen#new)) that he was an episcopal minister, and the records you've found relating to the family are from CofI churches.
I did find some Bett's in the teaching profession in Slater's directory of 1846... since they share both a profession and relatively uncommon surname with Thomas it seems possible that they are connected..
Slaters 1846
Geo. Betts, master of Irishtown charity school, Irishtown (Dublin)
Sarah Betts , mistress of infants' school, Irishtown (Dublin)
Mr. Betts, master of parochial school, Clara (Co. Offaly)

That is very interesting. While I was searching the records for St. Matthew's I found baptism's for My Thomas and Eliza Betts Children (the 3 oldest anyway) and I also found several baptism's for George and Sarah's children all living in Irishtown and baptized at St. Mattew's it listed George's occupation as teacher and Head Master. I also found a burrial record for a Thos Betts burried 5 Jan 1840, age 77. None of my relatives know much about the Betts family in Ireland but one distant cousin of mine said that Thomas Betts father was born 1762 and died 2 Jan 1840, his mothers name was Anne ? born 1778 died nov 1853.

I forgot to mention, Thomas and Elizabeth had a son, William Payne Betts born 27 Nov 1843 Clara, Kings county, Ireland. Is this a mistake or is there a Clara in Kings county and Offaly?

King's county is the old name for Offaly..

in 1873 there were various St Peters National schools in Dublin - 3 in Whitefriar St and another one (not sure where - perhaps in the parish of St Peter.)
some of the references to schools in Thoms give the Principal's name - I think mainly the Protestant ones
the school numbers are 754, 5008, 6268 and 6269.
the district is 38.
you can (could some years ago anyway) look at the Salary books for teachers in National Archive - it's a bit fiddly - you need to go in and talk to them. (maybe they're on microfilm by now). If I rightly remember, the books had to be ordered a day in advance. I think they start in 1830s/1840s.

Thanks to Eadaoin's input I found a reference to a Schoolhouse at No.14 Whitefriars Street in the 1860-1877 period in my Source Work based upon the Irish Times newspaper but unfortunately there is no reference to the Betts.
If you would like the newspaper references just come back.

some more details on Betts in Dublin, starting with Thom's 1850
two Bett's listed in the index -
Mr. George Charles Betts, Sandymount Green
W.H. Betts, teacher, Sandymount Green
the Sandymount-green section of the street listing shows :
Mr. George Charles Betts
William Betts , literary teacher
there is a unnamed School house listed in the Village described
as 'Female free school supported by subscription'
the same directory shows a 'St. Peters National School' between
numbers 13 & 15 Whitefriars Street, but no further details are given.
same details above are listed in 1852 Ed., except that the School is listed as no 14
there's no sign of either George or William on Sandymount green in 1877, but there is a similar Betts listings (same two first & middle name) in the 'List of Nobilty, Gentry, Traders etc' - could George have changed occupation ?
George Charles Betts and Co., direct wine importers, tea merchants, coffee roasters, and general dealers - 43 Grafton St, and 30 Henry St
also a personal listing for him :
George Charles Betts, merchant, 30 Henry St, res : Eastbourne, Terenure
I dont see a listing for him, or his house in the Terenure (Roundtown) section.
in 1880 the Henry St address is listed as both the business and, Mrs./Charles/William Betts (presumably living 'over the shop')

I am sure these Betts are probably related to my Betts. My Thomas Betts had a son named George Charles, b. 1839 baptized at St. Matthew's in Dublin. This George Charles Betts came to America in 1851.
I have been reading up on parish, townland, barony ect. I am still confused. In Thomas Betts marriage it states his address was OPP. St. Mary's Donnybrook. What does OPP stand for, is St. Marys the parish and what would Donnybrook be? If a person is listed as born in Irishtown what is the correct way to record that? Again thank you so much for your help.
-
The civil or Church of Ireland parish of St. Mary's includes Donnybrook, along with Irishtown, Ringsend and Sandymount.
not sure what the 'OPP.' may mean... usually I'd say opposite - maybe opposite the Church ? St. Mary's was on Simmons-court - a road/area which leads between Donnybrook and Merrion towards Sandymount.
What church did Thomas's marriage take place ?

Thomas was married in St. Catherine's C. of I. I found his childrens baptisms at St. Matthew's.

St. Matthews church is in Irishtown, and is in the civil parish of St. Mary's. It is described in a 1850 directory as "Royal Chapel of St. Matthew"
St. Catherine's church is in the city centre on Thomas St. (Its the parish church)

some additional info on St. Matthew's - it's location is described as Ringsend in the Ecclesiastical directory.
It looks like that area was in the Civil parish of St. Mary's but the 'church' parish of St. Matthews. All the locations are close together - see this google map Donnybrook to Irishtown (http://www.google.ie/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=donnybrook,+dublin&daddr=simmonscourt+rd+to:sandymount+green+to:irishtown&hl=en&geocode=FdiALQMdbQyh_yldwKUhMwlnSDHx5bS6p8cAJg%3BFaauLQMdNPug_ylnXdhYzw5nSDE-5S-TRLfW-g%3BFZ7GLQMdCiqh_yk5P9uy3g5nSDH0JmUwpqr4YA%3B&mra=ls&sll=53.323594,-6.220407&sspn=0.022557,0.055618&ie=UTF8&ll=53.32913,-6.215172&spn=0.033114,0.104542&z=13)
This shows the route from Donnybrook, via Simmoncourt (the location of St. Mary's church) to Sandymount Green, to Irishtown - a total journey of about 4km.

Thank you Shane, that helped alot.

Eadaoin mentioned of St. Peter's schools: "3 in Whitefriar St and another one (not sure where - perhaps in the parish of St Peter)". That last one may have been in Camden Row, where a parish school for St. Peter's parish was set up, either in the 18th century or early 19th century. St. Kevin's church, at that time a chapel-of-ease to St. Peter's, was also located in Camden Row.
-
Thank you so much. I have been looking for burial records for St. Kevin's, I never thought to check St. Peter's, so I did and found three possible matches for my Moore's.
