Title: The Cameron's and Pilkington's of Chirnside, Berwickshire, Scotland
Post by: Angela Burns on Saturday 23 January 10 04:21 GMT (UK)
I am still looking for more information on the Cameron's, Paxton's and now Pilkington's of Chirnside and abroad.  I know that John Cameron married Janet Paxton and they had:  Alexander (moved to NS, Canada), John, Margaret, Whilelmina, Anne (Married a Henry Augustus Cunningham Pilkington and had Emily and possibly a John Trotter Pilkington.  John and his son were killed in England on 24 Dec 1874/5 in a train wreck.), Jane and a Thomas.  I can't seem to find much information on any expect Alexander, who I descend from, and Whilelmina, who I have letters from her to Alexander.  I am interested in marriages, children anything really.  Please send along any information...Thank you.

Thank you Ruskie.  I didn't have the 1871 census.  I do have the 1841/51/61 census'.  These are definitely my family members and I would love to know more about them.  Anything else is greatly appreciated.  Thanks for the 1871 census!

This is the best site for research in Scotland:
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
You need to buy credits to view records, but costs are reasonable. Try to narrow down any possibilities before using credits as they can disappear quickly.

Free credits for Scotlands Poeple are available if you register here:
http://www.ancestralscotland.com/
You can also use the credits of friends and family if your register them using their email addresses.  ;)

Good luck.

Thank you Ruskie.   I have been on the scotslandpeople website, but can't seem to figure it out yet...I haven't spent much time there, as I did see it did cost, and I was looking first for anything that was free.

It is worth persisting with Scotland's People Dawn. You'll soon get used to it. There is a thread somewhere on rootschat about how best to search the site but I can't locate it unfortunately.

This might help a bit in the meantime:

Free stuff is great, and there is loads of it online, but sometimes you just have to pay to get what you need. Everyone has to pay for Scotland's People.

But there are the free credits via Ancestral Scotland. Get used to the site before you use them up.  ;)

With regard to Wilhelmina & Jane Cameron - I note they both died @ Lochiel, Chirnside and have seen this on the gravestone in the churchyard.  I moved into Lochiel in Jan 2010 and am trying to build up a history of everyone who lived in it.  I would love to know if you have any info in the letters you have to their brother about the house or how they came to live there.  The house was actually built as a United Presbyterian Manse but replaced by a bigger house in the later part of the 19th century.  So if you have any dates or info as to when they moved into the house or in what capacity I would love to hear from you.
